Nothing is going right the first time

Hi slingers.
I’w tell you the short and sad history of my first bolas Sad. In my first try to test the length proper, i used sintetic rope . This rope was green color with yelow little points. Ideal to miss it. Exactly, the first shoot and i missed it in the grass.  Shocked Several minutes after i found it. Not only on this occasion, happened some times more. I thought, great idea to paint the rocks and to tint the definitive strings. I did and i returned to try, but after few shots, one bolas stone impact whith another rock, it was broken. You can see the Photo.
Dont worry, I’m just  thinking in another idea  lead bolas  for evite this.
I'm not unfortunate, at least i found a proper  length and stone weigth combinated.  Wink
With a few drops of glue i'll get some nice bola for the museum . Grin Grin Grin

After the few shots that I could do I can say that the bolas are very funny.  Cool
Edited:
I moved your bola topic to "Other Primitive Weapons" and resized the pic for you. Masi.

Good job on pecking and grinding on the stones.  The problem with stone tools is if they are easy to work and make into tools, they break easy.  You may want to try a slightly harder stone next time.  I made a beautiful ax from a hard dense slate, it broke the first time I used it.  Bill

this is why i prefer antler to stone when making bolos. it's less dense, but way more resiliant and easier to work.

As Albert Eistein said, "if we knew what we were doing, they wouldn't call it experimenting". Wink

I made one of hardwood that works pretty well but wouldn't be for killing pray but rather for trapping them.  The gauchos used them instead of a lasso, so they didn't use stones for the bolos used to snare their herd animals but instead used either wood or sand bags.

I have my new bolas, two fishing weights 120 grams and another of 110 grams. It are not beautiful but easy and quickly to make and very functional. Fishing weights  are crushed but not broken.

Have you tried terminating the bolas with monkeyfist knots?

...

I use MFK (lol it kinda reads like a swearword in acronyms) so I stop breaking things accidentally. Plus if you don't use a stone inside (just cord) you can practice indoors and bola your cat, coffee mug, table leg... well you get the idea  Grin
