oh, and little, just because you live near a volcano doesn't mean there is knappable stone around. obsidian, dacite, and others are volcanic glasses, but they form deep under ground between shifting tectonic plates and are usually pushed up in and around moutain ranges. actual volcanos generally release little more than pumice and ash.

I think Paleoarts is right, Itll probably be vain to look for those stones near volcanoes, besides most of the rocks around here aren't fine-grained, and most are porous not like obsidian and the like, Alaska is an old place and I suspect that the stones I may be looking for are far beneath the surface, anyways i did find a great website that sells good flint knapping material, soo not all hope is lost it seems.
