Bill, you're getting that smell when using antler because it and hair are same thing on a molecular level.

how interesting! Didn't know that!!

oh, and little, just because you live near a volcano doesn't mean there is knappable stone around. obsidian, dacite, and others are volcanic glasses, but they form deep under ground between shifting tectonic plates and are usually pushed up in and around moutain ranges. actual volcanos generally release little more than pumice and ash.

he said there's a river stream nearby, probably he can find obsidian in the surface there  Wink
Greetings,
Mauro.

I think Paleoarts is right,  Itll probably be vain to look for those stones near volcanoes,  besides most of the rocks around here aren't fine-grained,  and most are porous not like obsidian and the like,  Alaska is an old place and I suspect that the stones I may be looking for are far beneath the surface,  anyways i did find a great website that sells good flint knapping material,  soo not all hope is lost it seems.

yeah, little, if you're in alaska then there is virtually no knappable stone around. this was why the early inhabitants of that area used micro-blade technology, were masters at grinding slate and greenstone, and had such an extensive bone and ivory tool kit. if you're serious about wanting to knap then the best deal out there for rock is this guy. http://www.walleringbeartradingpost.com/ ; great material at a really good price. tell him i sent ya  Wink

Didn't know you're from alaska  Smiley
well, at least you will make fine artifacts when you'll be expert enough!!
Howewer, take a look around; you could take these porous stones and use them for making levigated stone axes, one day  Wink

Mauro.

I beg to differ; Horn is equivalent of hair, antler is more like bone, both histologically as molecular.

Yeah horn, hair and your fingernails are all composed of keraton and antler is more of a bone as is my understanding. But I could be wrong.
