Amputee slingers
Sep 27th, 2010 at 3:59pm

I was just wondering if there were any amputee slingers like me out there. I just recently lost the bottom of my right leg in the diabetes war. I lost up to roughly 7-8 inches below thw knee. I was curious to see if there were any other amputee slingers out there. I mean how does one sling in a wheelchair? I know its possible because I have the idea in my head, after all, if I can think it that only means it has been thought about by others. I just really want to feel not so alone.

Hi, Loki;
    I'm very sorry about your leg.  I don't know of any amputee slingers, but my buddy Del's right arm is all but useless due to a lot of spinal problems.  He showed me his x-ray once, and he's got more metal in him than my car.  I tried to get him into slinging, but he just didn't have enough arm to get it done and left handed didn't work at all for him.  There's a happy ending though.  I showed him how to use a staff sling and gave him a nice bamboo one I'd made.  He's been slinging ever since.  If I was in a wheel chair I'd still sling, if I was able to.

Hi Loki,

Great to have you back although our sympathies go out as to the reason for your absence.

Coincidentally I have only recently posted a video of underarm style. It might just be adaptable to wheelchair use by doing the preliminary rotations well back behind you and swinging through in a partial sidearm. I gave it a "tryout" as I'm sitting here at the computer and it seemed OK by twisting from the waist only. Have a look at the video.

Regards,

Aussie

I just made some experimenting with a chair. Helicopter style would give you enough room to whirl the sling and in my opinion, is comfortable from a sitting position.

Loki, here's wishing that your recovery and adaptation go well and allow you back afield and slinging. It sounds as though you have the will to make it happen. Smiley

Although Im not an amputee,  I once had 2 screws in my hips after an accident one winter,  I now have one screw left,  holding my growth plate to the femur,  my left leg is shorter than my right  I have to use a brace in my left shoe.  there was this guy who tried to help me when I slipped and landed on my hip,  but it seems he got afraid and drove away,  for months ive had pain in my left hip,  at the local hospital they just told me to exercise,  but a few months later when walking up the stairs to go to church,  I was having lots of trouble going up and I was crying lots,  this was when I was 9 or 10,  so my pa said thats it we're going to the hospital.  Soo they found out that I had slipped capital femural epipethis,  meaning that the ball part of my hil was slipping away from my femur, causing my severe arthritis,  soo imagine ur hips to be straight, the femur aligned with ur body sideways,  but for me my is socket its normal,  but my femur is a little toward my rear.  I wonder if there is a way legally to charge that one hospital for mis-diagnosis,  because this one ailment has degraded my hips to the point of inflamation of the joints,  arthritis,  i cant do much physical activity at all these days...

You went to the doctor because he went to medical school. Imagine how bad it would be if you never had a doctor to fix it later. Even a doctor who gets it wrong is still working off of a lot more knowledge than you, and will be less wrong than you.  Embarrassed Sorry to hijack your thread Loki.

P.S.- I know how diabetes can hit you below the belt. My dad is an Endocrinologist, and he and I are the only men in our family without diabetes so far.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

My condolences about your leg Loki.

I have slung from a kayak before so from a wheel chair should be doable.

I gave a seatbelt sling to a Marine who lost his leg in Iraq once, he was on a prosthetic and seemed to pick it fairly quickly.

Speedy recovery and happy slinging.
