Slinging Rocks!

Using candle wax for making non-lethal projectiles
Sep 26th, 2010 at 9:36pm

Hey all

Today i was wondering how to make sling bullets and especialy sling bullets that are safe to practice with.
So i looked at some info here on the forum and i noticed a tutorial of making "sand bullets", tried it and love it.
I also noticed a tutorial on making (cement?) bullets with plastic easter eggs as a mold and i was wondering..

I have some plastic easter eggs right here and could i use them as a mold to make Candle wax bullets?
In my opinion these bullets would be heavy enough to pratice with and it would be a lot safer for me and other people.
But then again i'm no expert, so what do you think?

If I were using candle wax I'd carve it and then heat it to smooth the othside.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

well for non lethal ammo i heard of filling small water balloons with jelly, then duct taping over it. looks real fro ma distance and at speed, and totally non lethal.

candle wax might be non-lethal, but that doesn't mean it won't do damage  Wink

i.e, go chuck a candle at someone as hard as you can. then imagine doing so with an egg-sized lump of the stuff and with a sling.

More like non-lethal-esqe.

Bean bags are good. Sand bean bags work quite well for indoor slinging.

Thanks everyone for all those tips!

I definately keep the bean bags and balloon ideas in mind, not to sure about the paper though Wink
Maybe not such a bad idea afterall since the ancient Chinese used paper for making effective armor.

Cthulhu has a good point, getting hit by it would still be very painful but it's a better option then using rocks
when i practice in the park.
In my country, The Netherlands, there are almost no places where i can sling while being sure i am totaly alone.
It is a very small country filled with millions of people who often head to the parks to escape urban life.

So going to a place where i can practice alone without any chance of hurting someone is not an option.

At the moment i'm making a candlewax bullet, i wonder if it would be any good and in the mean time i'm thinking about
other material i could use.

Thanks everyone!

I remember years ago seeing a demonstration of shooting candle wax bullets from a muzzle loader. They make big holes.

The fairly safe standby most people here seem to advocate is tennis balls, particularly punctured ones to stop them bouncing.

Bean bags might be OK, but I'd still hate to get hit in the face with one.

Candle wax seems like a lot of work for what you get I know manny on here prefer to use a hacky sack but I usually use a very tight ball of paper wraped with duct tape and you can add more duct tape if you want more weight . My friend and I found out they can still leave a pretty good mark but they are still very safe. The only disadvantage is that they tend to lose velosity after a little while But that just makes them easier to find if you miss.

Let me echo wanderer's comments and also recommend tennis balls. Much less work than making projectiles, virtually impossible to throw more than 80 m and socially acceptable. Nearly all my slinging is done in local parks and I have never had anyone complain, tennis balls simply don't scare people.

i've used paper glandes before. they work well, and although light pack a punch. just take toilet paper, out in water, shake it around and stir till all the fibers are separated (pieces of saturated toilet paper doesn't count), shape, and let dry.

How strange.. topics on using tennis balls are all around the forum, yet i forgot about them.
And i agree they would be the best option so off to the store!

I made a Candlewax bullet right after my last post and you're right Dan, it was a lot of work Smiley i won't be making them anymore but at least it was a fun experiment and it flew great.
I will also try making those paper glandes one day

Yup you can do some serious damage with a tennis ball. On the other hand though as has been mentioned you don't get that negative reaction from passersby that you do with stones or clay.
