Dan, i'll tell you what i tell all beginners. the atlatl itself is really nothing more than a stick with a hook on one end. you can get decent results with nothing more that a broom handle with a nail in it. it's the dart where all the real technology lies and the thing that requires the most attention. check out Paleoaleo's (Tom Mills') youtube videos on dart construction for the most comprehensive tutorial. as far as the thrower, the most basic design is a simple hammer grip somewhere between 20'' and 30'' long (22-26'' being the average). but, the wide variety of sizes, grips, and styles are endless. check out my posts on this page under 'atlatls and darts' or on the trade page for some examples and ideas. i would also suggest going here http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/forums/24 ;  for ALL things atlatl. good luck.  Wink
