multiple strand braid, do you do this?

Hey, I just watched this video on youtube.ca and I noticed something I have never done nor have had occur to me for some reason, watch what he does with the set of 2 strands in the 4 strand round braid every time he braids it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLFUEOJcgfE
I have always just braided by keeping the strands in order, like the same strand at the top and bottom all the way down and it works great, but I notice here that he is twisting the two strands into a single strand each time he makes a braiding step. Have any of you guys tried this/do this and does it work well? I could see it making a stronger sling but I would think it would eat up more cordage?

I don't think it would eat cordage. It's a good way to teach people so that they don't lose track of the strands until they are practiced with keep the groups of cordage separate, but I don't do it.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

doing it that way would also make it look nicer, but only if it's soft cord like wool/(synthetic)yarn that'll compress together. twisting it with hard strands will make the braid more rigid than smooth (with non twisted hard strands it lies flat, but with multiple strands it might be bumpy).

I've tried it with hemp. I'm sure the sling would work, but like the kid says, it doesn't look too good.

Forgot to say, my reason for wanting to twist the cords is for increased strength (in case I want to use my sling as a tow rope or something)
. I do twist the warps in the pouch.
I will probably twist the yucca fibers I have collected when I get around to making that sling. Not that they need strengthening, but to keep the fibers under control
In that case, I think the sling will actually look better with twisted cords.
