More medieval sling pictures

David slays Goliath (of course  Smiley), Parc Abbey Bible, Belgium, c. 1148

Note the finger (or toggle?) loop.

The sling does not seem to be composed of different materials.

Michel van der Borch, David and Goliath, den Haag, Netherlands, 1332

An illustration to Jacob van Maerland's Rijmbijbel.

The sling on this picture appears to be made from different materials (cords, pouch).

David seems to have his stones in a fold of this tunic. Has anyone tried this ?

I haven't found the right tunic yet.  Wink

It's similar to this one http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1257503658/112#112 and, as far as I remember, even to one of the slingers on Trajan's column (and probably other depictions).

Maybe an artistic convention.

Yes, the slinger on Trajan's column-- with stones in fold, and also a single grip shield, I think. Might be doable, with blanket folded as cloak. Time to experiment.

After all, what do I do-- I cycle or walk, see some good stones-- they go into my pockets if I have my coat. But ancient coats have no pockets, they're just, well, thrown and draped and pinned blankets. So make a pouch, stuff it with stones, let it hang.

Spot on, I guess!

For collecting stones in the ages before pockets, a folded mantle surely was very useful.

As for shooting... I think Jaegoor has experimented to sling with reserve rocks in his tunic or his cloak, and did not find it very effective.

Hmm... the Bible mentions explicitly that David took the rocks out of his shepherd's (probably shoulder) bag. Why then depict him like this? Ignorance? Or a special intention?

Precisely. The artists use images from their own period. Ignoring David, Goliath is wearing medieval armor, not something from "whatever" BC. This sort of thing runs throughout the religious art of the Middle Ages. About the only ones dressed appropriately might be Adam and Eve, if you could call that dressed.

Because this topic is called "more medieval sling pictures", not "clothes David might have actually worn 2000 years earlier".

If you browse through the topics of this board, you will certainly find quite a number of very interesting pictures from the middle ages showing slings. Of course, they are mostly depictions of David and Goliath, but the clothing and a number of details of the slings and the way they are held is authentic for the respective period when the paintings/drawings/reliefs etc were made.

Pictures of slings other than from the David/Goliath story do exist, but they seem to be comparatively rare for the middle ages. One is the famous slinger from the Bayeux Tepestry, others can be seen here http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1257503658/15. Follow the discussion for more information on the subject.

There only a few pictures of slings because every picture had to be paid.
And the noble was rich enough to pay for this.
But of course they want to be at the pictures and not some farmer with slings Grin

Which man of the nobility would have liked to be depicted in "breeches" like these?

And a rural scene...

You should consider that many noblemen did not live much better than some of their free peasants.

And finally again the scene from the Tapestry, copied in silk. The colours, however, do not correspond to those of the original. They are my colours. The stones are original slingstones from the Lüneburger Heide whose authenticity has been proved. They are from the 11th century.
