my new edc knife
Apr 19th, 2010 at 7:21am

went to the gamekeepers fair at catton park yesterday. Cannot remember who brought it up, but I've been looking for a small bladed innocuous looking knife to replace my 3 inch folder ever since Smiley

Only one real knife dealer there and I ended up with this little beauty:

http://www.mantisknives.com/Product%20Zoom/B4%20Buzzard/b4_buzzard.html

It's a mantis blades (never heard of them before) b4 buzzard.
looks and feels like a serious quality item. blade opens closes very smoothly with either hand.
weighs 1.3 oz - my old edc is nearer 6 lol

even better it was priced at £23.95 and I got it for £20.

Got to say - highly recommended, particularly if you're looking a for small every day lock knife for opening, boxes, packages, cutting tape, cord etc.

And the bottle opener and screwdriver is a real bonus. Good thickness of metal on the opener gives the impressio you could put decent pressure on a screw with no problems.

I'll do a comparison video when i get the chance.

But if you're looking for a small - non-threatening in appearance, but eminently practical small edc - definitely consider this little gem Smiley

Nice design.  Don't know about sharpening that in-curved blade, though.

I just bought a new small knife for the same reason; ended up with a little Kershaw "assisted opening" job.
Pics up on the "other topics" area.

Yes, that would be a very handy knife to have around.  The only question now is how will it hold up?  It does look rather durable.

I wondered that- BUT it's dead easy, just use my normal diamond file, no problem.

build quality is seriously high. durability shouldn't be a problem.

yep that's what it says on the website - no idea what it means but it holds an edge quite well lol

The more I use it the more I like it.

Despite it's size it really is a sturdy bit of kit. And more importantly should not arouse the slightest 'oh my god he's got a knife !' from anyone lol

Only complaint so far: it's no good at chopping through brambles when I'm walking the dogs - but I think I'll stick the big knife in my dog walking coat - and that's that problem solved Smiley

Why does that matter? Are English people scared of knives/tools?  Wink

carrying a knife is illegal without good reason. that good reason means your job/reason requires you to have it, or it would increase the work done by a lot. self defense, being prepared, and other things like that don't count.

carrying a knife is not illegal - yet.

But having a LOCK knife in a public place is a prosecutable offence. And the definition of  'a public place' is vague bordering on conprehensive.

So a three inch long, wide bladed lock knife is tantamount to carrying a firearm in the current eyes of the law.

pic below illustrates the difference between my old edc and my new one Smiley

As you can see the old one is a tad conspicuous - great little knife cost $7 from walmart 3 years ago and has probably been used nearly every day since.
Wouldn't swap it for one 10 times the price

But I do have a tendency to whip it out with a flourish and a fast click on opening lol (david morningstar and slingbagder can testify to this, they both jumped lol). I can do the same with the new one and nobody bats an eyelid.

The new one is still technically illegal 'cause it's a lock knife - but the odds of anyone being worried enough to call the police is pretty much zero. And yes such sad people do exist.

Guy got done in burton recently for simply taking a knife out of his pocket and putting it back. Nobody anywhere near him, he wasn't threatening anyone probably just rearranging his pocket,  but some arsehole monitoring a cctv camera spotted him and he was prosecuted.
I don't intend to take the risk.
Sad, but unfortunately it's the law now.

I still have my little swiss army knife and the gerber, but I very rarely use the blades on those.

the knife I carry is an schrade  old timer stockman knife like this http://www.wellingtonsurplus.com.au/showProduct/CUTLERY/SCHRADE+CUTLERY/CK3911/S...
I carry it EVERYWHERE. the only time I don't have it on me is if I'm not wearing pants. Where I live, most people carry knives, so its not that big of a deal

I carry this SOG knife in my wallet in a credit card slot. It's perfect for unobtrusive carry and real use.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

that sog is a neat bit of kit - but in england would get you locked up faster than a peta member in a kentucky meat market.

I'll stick to my little mantis. And hey it also opens beer bottles, this is important as the bbq season has now started Smiley
