I was talking to a chap at the weekend who says that you can use Cuttlefish "bone" as a mould for casting lead. Aparrently it does not burn at the temperature of molten lead.
Has anyone tried this or heard of this before?

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.&&&&Remember - You are unique.............just like everybody else.

Nope very easy; pet shops, canaries apparently eat the stuff. Never heard of the possibility of using it for lead casting.

Yup, my brothers birds are chewing on two of 'em right now, they eat them for the calcium content. I will have to keep this in mind if I want to make some lead shot.

They're very soft, you can use anything sharp to carve into them, I remember those things.

at the right time of year you can pick up bags of cuttlefish bones of cornish beaches.
we used to bring them back for the neighbours birds.
The texture is a bit like that oasis garden foam stuff but harder. you can pretty much shape them with your fingers.

That looks like a big yes then,
Haven't got a clue when I will be able to get around to giving it a go.

i took a jewelry class in highs chool this year and we used cuttlefish backbones to make molds.
but our teacher told us that they can only be used once, but maybe thats not true if you just want
some solid design, and its not intricate.
