Let's see your Maquahuitl

I must say I have loved all primitive weapons and the true damage they can do. And at the top of my list of just true damage is the Maquahuitl. This ancient weapon is so deadly that there are accounts of it decapitating horses in one swing! But sadly I have currnetly broke mine and thought it was time to make a new so until then I thought it would be cool to see all your Maquahuitls! And hey mabye I'll be inspired!

Kuggur, don't underestimate these things. obsidian has the sharpest edge known to man, four times sharper than a surgeons steel scalpel, and when backed by several pounds of jungle hardwood it's more than up to the task. i've personally seen one cut clean through a pig carcass, completely severing the vertabre and several ribs. the one i saw was longer and slimmer than aztec's and there were no gaps between blades, but otherwise almost identical.

Last scientific study I saw on obsidian had it at 500 times sharper than surgical steel, with an edge going down to a single molecule. Got that around here somewhere...so yeah, it'll cut through just about anything...at least once.

Some people call them clubs, others call them swords. It was basically a wooden club with rows of obsidian blades pressed in. I've seen a Peruvian reconstruction macana/maquahuitl that had a long narrow grip with a short wide blade that expanded on one side, and it kinda looked like a battle axe. Let me see if I can dig up that picture.

Edit: Here's the best I can find, it shows the head, but not the shaft.

in some youtube video i watched there was a Spaniard and Aztec warrior comparison, but when ht maquahuital and the Spanish sword clashed, although the maquahuital was sharper, the obsidian blades completely dislodged. not as durable, and obsidian would chip and you would need to completely replace it.

also, although it is 5 times sharper than steel, that's referring to a chip or flake. the obsidian on a maquahuital would be thicker too.

Posts: 858 Gender:	Re: Let's see your Maquahuitl Reply #11 - Mar 27^th, 2010 at 5:45pm all done and ready for pitch and obsidian. i think it looks pretty authintic. its 29 " long and almost 3" at the widest. i was lucky enough to get a 2 " thick plank , that gave me enough to make the handle part as round as i could without weakening it. it really makes a difference on how it fits your hand

Look's Great Aztec "Perfect size & shape", That's some Beautiful Wood and It's gonna look even better with the Obsidian In place, Thank's for sharing the picture, I cant wait to see that Beauty when It's done ! Are you gonna do some "Aztec Art" painting on It ? And add some feather's & leather wrap ?

You did an Excellent job on your other one that you posted above, You do some Real Nice Work !

yea i love mahogany. it sands and carves so clean. its some amazing stuff . i just hope it turns out good. my blades arent really knapped..theyre just flakes but either way itll be dangerious

im not very good at decrotive carving or painting Grin

so ill probly leave it simple. but maybe later ill go back to it when i know what im doing
