I'm thinkin' Crossbow.

As much as I'd like a high power .22cal Air Rifle I'm just not thinking that in a survival situation they'd be effective at much more then taking small game. I've been kickin' around the idea of a good recurve crossbow. Unlike a compound crossbow it's simple and with bolt selection I can take anything from rabbits to dear and boar and I can reuse the "ammo" as long as I don't lose it. It's quite so I can practice in the back yard. I still have my archery target that I used with my recurve bow. Also, a crossbow would be easy to use form cover since you don't need to move much to use it like you would with a standard bow.  I just wonder what a good quality crossbow would be, guess I'll have to google it and do some research.

Ok, here's one that I found. Price is good, #175 draw weight so it's reasonable powerful and it's a recurve so it's simple. I can stock pile a couple doz. bolts and be "good to go" for survival/hunting.

sounds like a good alternative, Frank. my only suggestion is that you include a spare string (cable) in your kit. that's not something you can replicate/replace easily on your own.

I was just about to say the same thing! One or even two spare bowstrings would be prudent. You often need a stringer cable thingy as well to get them on.

Since you dont need to worry about spine in crossbow bolts (they are too short to flex and are guided by the trough in any case) they are easy to knock up in the field, just make sure they are heavy enough to absorb the power of the shot.

I had a bow string jig that I sold with my recurve. I got it because the string length on my longbow was so long that no one in the local area had bow strings for it so I just make my own.  Most crossbows take a 26.5" string length, I can get a couple extra to keep on hand, always a good idea. I'll just follow the recomendations for shafts, IIRC it was like a 2219 or some such and with a 32" shaft I can cut it into two 16" crossbow shafts so I'll basicall get two for one.  I'll probably have to get back into a fletching jig so I can just buy bare shafts, cut em' and install the knocks and tip adapters along with fletching. That'll save me a few bucks in the long run. I think a couple doz. shafts should last for a while. Anyway, just thought I'd throw this idea ya'lls way to see if it'd fly or not. I think it's a pretty decent way to go.

Where do you mount the scope on that thing. Undecided LOL, just kidding. They do look pretty cool but I've got to stay practical and that means "modern" for the most part.  I really think the Fury would be a good crossbow to get for the price.  It comes with everything I'll need to get started and I can pick up a fletching jig and some bare Easton shafts and cut em' down to make up my own arrows/bolts so I can save a few bucks.  Anyway, thanks for the link.  Wink

Frank, did you notice that there's no prices on the site.
It's the old adage, if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.  Embarrassed

I have to say Ive never used a fletching jig and never needed one, and I bind my fletches on without glue which is a fiddly job. You can just do it by eye and it comes out fine. If you really want, have a piece of card with a hole for the shaft and radial slots for the vanes at the correct angles and use that to guide you.

Make sure you check with your local fish & game laws, many states restrict crossbows to one degree or another.   Here in Missouri, for instance, you can't use one during deer archery season; you have to wait for gun season.

Tennessee ok'ed Crossbows for hunting a couple years ago so I'd be fine.  I really don't think I want to eye ball fletching on something that's going to be #175 draw and shoot an arrow at 235fps,LOL.  Fletching jigs are cheap and will give me a perfect 120 deg. angle between vanes, plus it'll help to hold em' in palce while the glue drys.  I had enough fun putting fletching on my atlatl darts by hand, don't want to do the same with a crossbow bolt,LOL.
I really want to get one that'll let me use 16" bolts, that way I can turn 6, 32" arrow shafts into a doz. crossbow bolts just by cutting em' in half.

Might consider a 'Goats Foot' to help with cocking.

They have a string with a couple pulleys on it to help with that. Not so much that I'd need it to cock a #175 crossbow but it keeps it cocked even more then anything else.

Glad you're able to thingy  Roll Eyes  a #175 o.k. If we are talking TEOTWAWKI you may not have the strength to thingy it. A mechanical assist may be needed. Since a thingy is involved would that be a wanking machine?
and thats as far as I'm going with that thread.
