To get better performance try varying the weight of each ball. If you have a belt grinder remove just a little mass from one ball and only slightly more from another. Leave one of them alone, though. The difference in weight will help the bola spread out quickly once it's thrown.

Or shaving off bits of the balls with a vegetable peeler if you find 3 more for your next bola. That slight difference is what makes 'em work so well. If I'm ever in a position that I need to hunt for food without a gun my weapon of choice is a bola.

M, the bola you describe (one long cord, two shorter) is the classic Argentine variety used by the Gauchos to wrangle livestock and are generally much larger than this type and meant to be deployed from horseback. i have made and used those as well and they do work great, but for hunting purposes i think this version is better suited, especially in less than fully open terrain. the Argentine is strictly for entanglment whereas the hunting bola often kills by a 'clubbing' effect. i have always made mine from either antler or stone or wood and as such there is always a slight difference in size and weight between the ends.

The weight comments were mostly directed towards echelon7 because his bola was made from uniformly sized balls.

And you did a Beautiful Job Chris, Are you gonna have time to do both Sling's the Stag and the one with the Hide Braided Pouch also ? I'll send you another E-Mail but on the two Sling's I measured from my armpit to my thumb and It's 25" So If you could make then at 25", Excellent Job on the Bolo Chris "I cant wait to learn to throw It, We got Lot's of Wild Turkey's & Geese In my area I'll have to ask the Game Warden If a Bolo Is Legal for taking the Critter's"Somehow I dont think so" But I'll ask anyway" The other Sling I got from you Is a Goodun, I've been useing It with Tennis Ball's and my Dog's are getting there exercise In now ! You do some Real Nice Work Chris, The Sling I got from you Is Beautiful "Thank's Again " !
