I want to make a sling staff and wanted to know what some of u think is better loop or ring or the split and knot if I go with the loop i was thinking of using a cow horn for the tip as this would be tappered and smooth but if i use the split and knot i dont have to buy a cow horn so what do u think is better  Shocked

Loops are okay for a quickie staff sling but a proper ring and a 45 degree angled notch for it to sit in is better. It will wear out much less and friction wont be a variable to mess up your shots. The ring I used on mine was an old plastic curtain ring.

If you use the slit and knot design then you have to be careful to sand away all the roughness from the inside of the slit and the edges so it doesnt wear out the cord. You can use a knot or a bead instead of a ring to secure the release cord, which might be easier to get or make than a ring.

I've seen a bead fly off on a slit-n-knot staff that released unpredictably. I would say loop.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

I've only used the loop, so I can't really say, but the loop worked out great for me.. no problems at all.  I tried several different designs for the pouch.  They all worked fine.  The one I get the best range out of is an asymmetrical pj pouch.  Make sure you make a pouch that can hold a big projectile.  You will be amazed at how little effort it takes to hurl a very heavy projectile a great distance.  With my thicker, medium length (don't remember exactly.. I gave it to a buddy) staff sling I was chucking rocks the size of my fist eighty yards with almost no effort.  I'm not exaggerating at all.

The cows horn is a wild touch.  Jaegoor's staff sling is certainly impressive. I vote for that.

The only staff sling I ever made is shown on a video that I posted to Youtube.

Here's the link.

Staff Sling video

It uses a loop, and a Cliff's Woven Pouch sling, and I had good slinging with it.  (I've since taken the sling off the stick, though, because I wanted to use the stick.)

forked stick.
it's easier to make and has the advantage of keeping the cords apart to reduce tangles.

Sorry, BEERDRINKER, but the question should be; How accurate is a staff-slinger Wink
The staff-sling itself has capacity to be used with surprisingly good accuracy (more like hitting garbage can- size targets than the bull`s eye, of course)with some practice, how accurate depends on how much practice.
Well, at least this was my experience last winter after staff-slinging a lot of snow balls at things Smiley

Like the "stringwalking" from the archerie you can exactly use the different grips on a staff-sling.
This is to have the same shotstyle, but for different ranges - like Golf.

Because of a different grip you change the range - like a trebuchet with different weights.

With this kind of slinging I´m able to hit someone in a battle within a ranges of 80-100 meters.

In german reanactment battles its already known. Wink

The picture has me confused.  It looks like the loop has not left the sling!  The sling pouch itself still looks like it's configured to be holding the ammo.   Am I seeing it wrong?

If you compare this pic of Jaegoor's, you see that he has two retention cords due to the special shape of his pouch. http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1259158805/15

The release cord is single and can also be guessed behind the letters on the pic in this thread. It's actually hanging down after a successful release.

Ah, in the picture I was referring to, I now see that there appears to be a third cord, which has "dumped" toward the photographer.  Mystery solved!
