makeing a knife from a chainsaw bar
Nov 29th, 2009 at 9:04am

Is a chainsaw bar good steel? If it is is it tempered? and if not, whats the best way to temper it? I ask because my dad has an old one and it seems like I could make a good knife out of it, and if it works, I could probobly get more for free.

I have heard that they make very nice blades, depending on your skill of course.

I remember hearing that they are a good material. Just don't remember the context or who claimed it.

Circular saws are excellent for blades. I made one that served me well for years. It's already tempered. What you have to do is trace out your design and cut the shape out. if you use a torch to cut it out, you destroy the  tempering, and it has to be redone. If you have a machine shop near you they could probably do it for you. It can be done with a hacksaw, but it's work!

Sawing tempered steel with a hacksaw....to much work for my taste... actually wonder if it could be done.

Yes it can. I did it. It's also when I decided to try other ways to make the blades.

Yep, chainsaw bars make excellent swords. Cheesy A friend of mine has a gladius made from one.
The guy who made it used a grinding wheel i think. I dont think it messed with the tempering (Though it still would have gotten pretty hot) as its really a very good sword. You can chop wood with it and it wont need sharpening.

though I've never tried it, everything I've read indicates that it's very difficult to cut a blade out of steel stock without loosing the temper.  Probably the best tool is an angle grinder with a proper cutoff wheel.  (not the grinding wheel, but the thin, reinforced cutter)

It's still going to get hot, and likely will need to be re-tempered.

How would you go about re-tempering a blade that was made that way?

I'd assume that it is high carbon stainless steel for strength and rust resistance. If it is then go for blue, dunk it in oil, and clean the oil off. Then do red and dunk it in oil again. Different steels need to be treated differently for the best performance.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.
