What were the lengths of the 3 Balearic slings?
Oct 15th, 2009 at 8:53am

I've read they kept 3 different slings for warfare a short, medium and long, but I haven't read about the actual lengths.  I'm sure each warrior would have his own preferences but does anyone know the approximate lengths of each sling?

Thanks  RJ

My guess, and its only a guess, would be:

Short: 20 to 24 inches loaded for up close accuracy

Medium: anywhere around 32" for general purpose chucking

Long: seriously long, four or five feet easily, for lobbing the half-pounders that could sink a raiders landing boat from the clifftops.

Thanks a lot.  I know I'm asking a lot of subjective questions, but I'm really having fun trying to get more accurate.

What would be close up chucking?  under 20 yards?  As a 4 week beginner is that the length I should practice with at that distance?  Right now I'm trying to get as pin point as possible from 5 to 10 yards.     Or would it be best to stick with the 30" I made yesterday and learn that one well?  My goal is to perfect my accuracy as much as possible for squirrel or rabbit hunting for a survival situation.

winklereid knows sling lengths Smiley
balearic target distances are (approx) 15feet, 30 feet, 60 feet and 90 feet.
They throw at a 3 foot square target with an 18 inch disc in the centre.

And if you can hit the three foot target at 90 feet you're doing well Smiley

Hell no - short to medium slings for the big rocks. Long slings for distance bombardment.
You ever tried to sling a half pound rock with a 5 foot sling ?
Not easy and almost impossible to be accurate.

I would stick with the 30" for now and just try various styles looking for smoothness of delivery rather than absolute speed. For what you want to do, choose heavier stones around four ounces. A surprisingly mild throw will whip them at your target with crushing force.

we've discussed this before actually, exact lengths, whatever is here

as for the hunting thing- I'd say 30 inches is fine. any length is fine but a longer sling is harder to get the same accuracy as a shorter sling. if someone practiced wit a 80 inch sling there life, they may be able to hit just as good as someone who practiced with a 28 inch sling.

That almost exactly what I normally carry.  And for the big stuff a staff sling.
