the quiver takes only one piece of bamboo, and probably some plywood- bamboo get's pretty thick, and is naturally hollow so you just need a plywood bottom

I'm also using an pine board- i hear it''s not the best bow wood but a good starting bow material. I'll later probably use a split tree trunk/log

theres a big stand of bamboo near my house  Wink i just take my machete and get how much i want.

i didnt use a plug in it ,just the naturel nodes in the bamboo. i did put a peice of thick leather down in it to protect the node from broad heads though.

i tried making bows when i was younger. i never did get one that held up very long. but maybe now since ive learned more woodworking skills i could do better. so ill hafta give that another go soon

i have a longbow, recurve and a compound but i mainly use the compound for bowfishing, i got the longbow off of ebay for a pretty good price(it came wit like 4 dozen wood arrows too) and after my uncle died my aunt gave me his recurve. and the compoud came from a yard sale  Grin

the long bows my favorite by far though.

I'm planning on makeing a bow once I get the stuff, and one of those would be a great accessory, how do you get the bamboo so smooth?

its smooth as is but when you cut it you can use sandpaper to smoothen the edges. and if you have a torch or some kind of heat sorce like a camp stove you can run the flames over the bamboo,it draws the moisture out and leaves a realy waxy/shiny finish on the bamboo. just becareful to not go to far and burn it

youve got a wonderful looking quiver..simplistic yet beautiful. I need a decent back quiver because all i have atm is a cheap side quiver.

The trick about bow making is dedication.. I have a pile of tools ive bought for "making bows" but have had a board bow sitting around untillered for months.

one thing i've learned about bow making....you're gonna break 'em no matter what! it's better to just dive right in and go for it. you'll make many mistakes on your first bows, but you'll learn from that as you go until eventually you get better and produce something of quality that will last you forever. you don't want to spend a whole lot of money on expensive woods or materials when you're first starting out. save that for when you know what your doing. knock out six or seven cheap ones first and get it down, then spring for that osage or hickory stave. my best advice is to go into the woods or fields and find the straightest, knot free branch you can (about three inches wide), split it down the middle, and shave it into shape. doesn't matter what kind of wood, it's gonna break anyway! you're just getting used to working it and learning what not to do. repeat that a few times and you'll be ready for the real deal.  Wink

I am going to try on a bit of wild hickory (slightly knotted), but it is still aging.  *twiddles thumbs*

When you say "shave it into shape", what are you shaving it with?

anything that you can shave it with, whether it be a knife, machete, or chainsaw (might be a little messy though...)

well, that depends. if i'm going 'paleo', i split the limb using moose antler wedges then whittle and shave with flint flakes. if i'm doing it 'primitive', i split it with my knife and a piece of wood, then rough shape with a hatchet, then fine shaving with the knife again. if i go the modern way, i saw it in half on the band saw, saw it to shape with the jig saw, and reduce it with wood rasps and the belt sander. i've also used various combonations of all three methods. what i recommend for those with limited tools is the second option.
