hia everybody this is my first topic Grin

this is a weapon used by a race called the kender (unique to the dragonlance books very good read) its used as a walking stick and a catapult.
it took me years of not so vigilant looking to find the perfect branch for it (and even then its still a little bit bent in the middle) but here it is.

lol nice one - a stabilised slingshot Smiley
If you carve a notch near the other end you can attach a sling and use it as a staff slin too !

There was a guy who used a forked branch to make a staff-sling hoopak, in the pic below. The center cord is shorter than the other two so as the pouch goes 'over the top' it pulls on the back of the pouch and rolls the ammo out of the front.

greetings - I loved the Dragonlance books and always wondered how the hoopak worked, most descriptions were a bit ambigious, it seems to be a Staff/sling/slingshot/spear/Bullroarer - can you get yours to make the bullroarer noise?

heres a couple of links to descriptions ive found -

I agree that the descriptions were pretty vague. It was fiction, (and really good until they opened it up to a jillion different authors), but if a person knew how a bullroarer worked, they could probably make a hoopak that made noise.

If I remember correctly, the pictures shown of a hoopak showed it with pretty short cords, like six inches long or so, as opposed to the lengths commonly found in a staff sling. I wonder if that would make much of a difference performancewise.

Amen!
But please don't get "Staff Slin(g)" confused with the Slinging dot org staff.
They hate it when that happens.

From
http://www.dlnexus.com/fan/rules/14451.aspx
"
Hoopak: The hoopak is the most common of kender tools. This 5ft., ironwood staff has a short spike attached to its tip, which doubles as a spear or bo stick and inflicts the first damage value listed in the above chart for both. The staff's other end is forked and laced with gut. A stone may be flung by either planting the blade end of the hoopak in the earth and bending the staff back to sling the stone, or whirling the hoopak overhead as a traditional sling-staff. This tool acts like a bullroar when whirled in the air, creating a low thrumming sound. Other uses include prying with the blade, and picking apples with the gut
."

Sounds like a LaCroix stick to me. (Ok, Lacrosse. The Indians who played the game were La Croix.)
The above description above does not mention a sling, just lacings at the forked end.
Made out of "Ironwood" and yet retains a lot of spring flex to be used as a catapult with the end simply stuck in the ground.

Now you know why I gave up reading SciFi.

in my opinion, they suck, extremely cheasy, and waste of time. BUT...
i read one a summer ago and DID find it entertainign and ammusing, and i started a trend with em.
i read it then didnt read them for all the school year, then started again in the summer, sooooooo...
now i only read them every summer, and its a hobbit,  and i do find them ammusing despite what i said.
hoopaks ok, but id rather the company of archers from the first book i think? (the just foud out ninas a freaking beastly girl)
