looking for ideas :)
Apr 16th, 2009 at 2:02pm

i recently found an ash ( if it is fresno it is translated correctly?) tree on one of my friends new house.
since i recalled something about ash being good to make bows i asked her mother if i could cut a branch.
she agreed but only one she said. now i have a 1.6 meters long branch of ash, the same diameter of my index finger in one side and the size of my closed fist in the bulky end. now i realize it has too many knots to make a good bow.

the question is: what to craft with it?

i was thinking of a walking stick (bastón) for my favorite uncle, who got his hip injured on a car acident. by the way he is 1.90 meters tall

or cut it in sections to make rabbit sticks.

or make a wooden club out of it

maybe i could make a couple nunchuks

or an atlatl.

any new ideas are welcomed, im so undecided because ash happens to be very rare here in oaxaca and i was allowed only one branch.
thanks in advance

Yuo can also turn it into a spear and put one of your glass tips on it. It would look great.

Big thing is the wood drying. If it is still green it is easy to work, but can crack, bend and warp as it dries. It all depends on what it is carved into. The more fragile and finer the carving, the likelier it happening.

Hallo Castanon.

When you get a good piece of 60cm, you can build a minibow.
My own has 40cm and is shown with a real arrow. The minibow is made of bamboo the arrows also. My longrange record with this bow is 112m. It´s verry funny to search the arrows.

Greetings Michel

I would let it cure for at least a year, better two and make a nice walking stick out of it.
I actually made a walking stick out of an ash shovel handle last year, wittled a ram´s head in the top .

Fx 2000, nice bow! at first i thought that arrow was a spear Smiley

adsi, im not going to hollow it to make a blowgun lol

rockman, that would be a very good idea, but i dont want to break my arrowheads... just yet, and i want to actually make something useful with the branch Smiley

im considering making a mini-bow as the one fx 2000 posted, it looks cool  Smiley

thanks to everyone for their replies, keeep em coming, i mean, i have time don't i? maybe a couple months or a year Cheesy

if it's rare and valuable wood, and you prize your skill good enough to make good use of it - then all the better it is for a really nice gift.

that is, if your uncle is in walking sticks. if he is not, if they are of no special value to him, i'd say make a club.

i noticed you wanted to make some knifes in Fx 2000's thread. Maybe you could make a few handles from the wood, vanish it and then stick a homemade blade into it?

Well Castanon, if it comes from your hands, done with love, then your uncle will appreciate it, so don't let that stop you. Some of the art I started out making is totally embarrassing to me now.

haha, made with love... that sounds very barney-ish but its true.

but i really like the idea of making the knife handles from the branch, first i need to get someone in the hacienda to lend me the powertools lol

powertools? if your really desperate you can just use a saw and file. I once made a training knife out of wood for karate with only a file and saw.
