you want an obtuse angle, with a short side and a long side. the short side should be wickedly sharp and dangerous. the other side should be comfortable and smooth. you grip the long side and you sorta throw it. i'm not sure about the throwing but, i do know the construction of it...
i made one yesterday

it was easy an took me less than 10 minutes, mainly because the branch already had the shape, i tested it just once yesterday an it flies "strong and true" i hitted the tree (wow what an acomplishment) from 30, to 40 yards, and the stick was lost in the foliage, (im not sure if "foliage" means leaves) i got it back a few minutes ago. heres a pic.
Pd. i dont know what wood it is, it is a branch taken from one of the trees in the backyard, but it is very strong and heavy, and kinda dificult to cut. i realized a rabbit stick could be a very good self defense weapon, you know, like a wooden sword-club
