Yep. Remember to throw slightly to the right of the wind direction with lots of forward spin. Try with one of the foam or plastic toy ones before you step up to a wooden one.

Oh, and try not to clobber anyone!

i made one like a year ago, it took me ages to carve the wood to the shape i though correct
didnt serve for anything though, eventually got frustrated and threw it to a concrete wall several times till it broke.
if that happens to you, dont give up, now i realize i should have worked on it some more, now im too lazy to start again from scratch
i dont have powertools, everything was done with a knife and sandpaper

Back in college days when a grop of us were learning the use of the sling one of the gang produced a boomerang in woodwork lessons. If i remember it was made of some hard heavy mahogany. His dad had lived in Australia and had showed him how to make one. It was a proper hunting job with shallow angle & one arm longer than the other. It did not come back when thrown but flew straight & hard. First time & only time i saw it used in anger he stopped the car & leapt out, there was a flock of ducks on the shoreline and as he raised his arm they stuck their heads up to see what was happening, Bad idea! he scored a direct hit on a large mallard drake & it was killed instantly. Range was about 30 yards and we were amazed at how effective it was. The duck was eateb the next night!

I had several when I was in the Navy, including a nice mahogany one. When conditions were just right I could do 2 things

1 Have it glance off the ground and continue in flight.

2 When it returned, it would hover for a few seconds before dropping.

You also have to consider if you are a rightie or a leftie. There are rightie and leftie boomerangs you know.

well, do you mean 'boomerang' as in returning and not used for hunting or 'throwing stick, used for hunting and does not return?

knowing this helps

in my opinion, these are more enjoyable than the wooden ones, but thats just me!

In that case, you want to grasp it by the short end, so that it will tumble correctly.  Any good hard wood will do, so long as it is not too heavy for you to throw.

you want an obtuse angle, with a short side and a long side. the short side should be wickedly sharp and dangerous. the other side should be comfortable and smooth. you grip the long side and you sorta throw it. i'm not sure about the throwing but, i do know the construction of it...
