I also found a pretty good site that explains quite a lot: http://www.musketeer.ch/blackpowder/handgonne.html There are also very good illustrations and instructions how to make those things.

It's just a small unmounted cannon ! Also very interesting is his reasoning for homemade powder performing better than modern nitro powder. In a museum I have seen a combinaton war hammer/"gonne". I was all in one piece. The grip was the barrel, and a rod shaft connected it to the hammer head.

I find it hard to understand why people prefered "gonnes" to slings, but a loud bang, a ball of fire, smoke, a singing sound in the ears afterwards, and a deadly lead ball flying in the general direction you aim may have made people feel they got what they paid for

I had in my collection an original of Swiss manufacture that I bought in Abercrombie&Fitch when they really sold adventure gear and had a very very fine gun shop on the premises.
