http://www.handgonne.com/gonnes.html

I think that a gonne was in essence the primitive beginnings of a gun...

I got interested in handgonnes few years ago and I did do some research. I also found a pretty good site that explains quite a lot: http://www.musketeer.ch/blackpowder/handgonne.html

There are also very good illustrations and instructions how to make those things.

Oh wow - love the webpage with the nutter and the gonnes.
It's just a small unmounted cannon !

Also very interesting is his reasoning for homemade powder performing better than modern nitro powder. As someone who's made his fair share of black powder over the years - it makes perfect sense.

Nice links - thanks Smiley

In a museum I have seen a combinaton war hammer/"gonne".  I was all in one piece.  The grip was the barrel, and a rod shaft connected it to the hammer head.

I find it hard to understand why people prefered "gonnes" to slings, but a loud bang, a ball of fire, smoke, a singing sound in the ears afterwards, and a deadly lead ball flying in the general direction you aim  may have made people feel they got what they paid for  Smiley.

People preferred the Gonne over the sling because a sling canot penetrate armor like the gonne can. Plus it is easier to train people to use the Gonne.

As a blackpowder fan for some time, I am quite familiar with the cannon-on-a-stick you call a gonne. I had in my collection an original of Swiss manufacture that I bought in Abercrombie&Fitch when they really sold adventure gear and had a very very fine gun shop on the premises.
