Who here also uses an ATLATL?

YouTube videos about slinging almost inevitably lead to videos about atlatls.  I remember learning vaguely about them in junior high school.  I do find them interesting, and would like try them out, but I never have as yet.

It doesn't seem as easy to get into atlatling as it does to get into slinging, that's for sure.

So, who here "crosstrains" with atlatls?

I'm on the lookout for suitable atlatl dart shaft material but I havent found anything yet. I have been interested in making one for some time now.

Paleoaleo is the go-to guy as far as learning about the atlatl is concerned: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=search_videos&search_query=paleoaleo+...

I have known about atlatl a long time, and I think propably we boys tryed to make them, but this was a little time before internet, and we never found enough info to make them work good.

I remember having seen on TV a demo of a re-usable dart shaft, for short range mammuth killing, with the dart points having sort of a socket, with the shaft loosely attached, so it bounced back when the dart hit the mammuth.  The hunter could then pick up his shaft, put on his next point, and do his next throw.

Carrying a big bundle of darts seems like the great drawback with atlatling, after beeing used to just stuff a sling and some sling-ammo down in the pockets Wink

But it seems like great fun Grin

Atlatl darts weigh in the range of 90-110 grams according to one thrower at Paleoplanet.
Mileage will vary according to the size of your dart. A lot  Shocked less than your spear.

Most of the golf discs I throw are in the 165-175 gram range, and I can get them to go about 300 feet or so on a good drive.
Of course, they're not just falling through the air, they're flyingWink

There's actually quite a lot of information on the web; in addition to the Paleoweb site indicated there are commercial makers, enthusiasts, and university anthropology-types.
If you get the Military Channel, the show Weapon Masters had a segment on the weapon, and there are some short videos up on the website.  Go to Military Channel and do a search for Weapon Masters.

I built one a few years ago, pretty crude but quite functional.  I just roughed the shape out of a piece of lumber and filed/rasped it into shape.
Used a very traditional Grin vinyl-covered aluminum garden stake as the dart, complete with duct-tape fletching.
Silly thing flew quite well with a bit of added weight up front.

Since then, I've gotten a large number of wild turkey feathers I use for fletching arrows, and I plan to use either bamboo or river cane shafts to make a more traditional dart.

You missed one option for the poll: Have done it/Failed miserably.   Wink

It's a really cool weapon, but I only got a good shot about 1-in-10 times, and get never repeat them. Must have been something about the design of the darts and the release nock, and my technique. Unfortunately, the atlatl launcher is in the shape of a nice club - when you get frustrated with a sling, it's hard to take it out on the sling, but when the atlatl annoys you, it gets slammed into trees and rocks, or thrown like a rabbit stick. Poor thing.

I've been messing around with Atlatls for longer than I've been slinging, though I have put a lot more time since I started into slinging, and am consequently better at it.  I've never measured the range I get with my atlatl darts... must try that out.

never been a fan of the term Atlatl, I always use the term Woomera (sounds a lot nicer to my ears  Wink) also here in Australia, this is pretty much most widely used term for a spear/dart thrower.

Im also a fan of yorkshire arrow throwing, where you use a small piece of rope to throw the dart - would that constitute as a flexible woomera?

either way, it's always good fun  Wink

Yesterday, I thought about improvising an atlatl- thrower, since I have axess to stright-grown hazel who might possibly work as darts.
I went out in the forrest. I could not find the thrower blank I had in my vision, so I used one a lttle bit crocked the wrong way, and to thick.  Wery club like.
It thought me a lot, especially after I attached a double paracord finger loop to it, wich gave it the ability to swing down and give my ankle a good, hard, solid wack, and my imrovised dart a good, stright flight Smiley.

I was wery happy I could learn so much from it  Cheesy

In the end I had a lot of fun with my new "rabbit stick" Wink

I enjoyed making my atlatl. Basically I need to make better darts. I just got some cane that is a little green. I have no idea what species it is.
