High speed video of slinging
Sep 24th, 2008 at 6:16pm

In many videos they slow the frames down in order to show the flight of the stone or what have you, but are there any high speed videos, as in 2000 frames per second or above, of a sling in use?

To the best of my knowledge there are no posts at anything approaching 2000 frames/sec of slinging, or even 1/20 th of that speed. I have certainly not seen any.

I would guess the fastest original frame rates posted around here are 60fps, and rather low resolution. I think 2000fps would be a significant overkill for everything except perhaps images of bullets hitting melons.

So do you have such a camera lying around waiting to do something?  Grin

Well, yeah, 2000fps might be a bit excessive, but something slow enough and a close enough shot where you can see the interaction between the sling and the stone as it is released without it being blurry and whatnot.

willeke took some of me at 60fps - but at that speed the vid was only 320-x240.

They're on the forum somewhere.

They are great videos.

What is that style/technique called (in the first video)?
Looks like a good, effective one to emulate...

I'd call it Byzantine. He is actually using a sidearm throw as opposed to the overarm throw of Hondero, who named the style.

All the clips are actually the same shot played back at different speeds to show the finer detail. The style is generally known as Byzantine. Bear in mind that the naming of slinging styles is hardly an exact science and th same style may often have several different names. Even what constitutes the essential features of any given style varies considerably. Do a search on Fig.8 to see how much controversy that particularly popular style has generated.

I had great success this afternoon with the Greek style.  The one where the off hand cocks the spin and the sling rotates above the head like a helicopter rotor and releases sort of sidearm.  I had such good success with it that I really want to focus on it and keep at it, almost to the exclusion of Figure 8, Byzantine, Apache...

Oh, and my mini staff sling was great going, too. Smiley

For accuracy, the Greek throw works best for me also. The other throw the lads are calling Byzantine,I liken to a baseball pitched, and for me is second to none for power at short range.
