I don't think the banning of theological discussion makes sense. One of the beauties of this forum is we don't have a massive, tedious code of conduct or list of forbidden subjects. Instead, we have a basic respect for other members. Once we start imposing limitations on what can and cannot be discussed, we start telling each other that we are not mature enough to handle ourselves in a respectful manner.
And then we get insulted.

I think that since it's incredibly easy to navigate away from a page that contains discussion which you find illogical or unintelligent, trying to forbid it is unnecessary.
Believe me, I've seen what the old politics/religion bomb can do to a message board. Fortunately, most folks on slinging.org have managed to avoid this stupidity for a long time. We've had plenty of fun and intellectually stimulating discussions on the topic of religion. I think we just need to remember that everyone of us has our own beliefs, and that everyone is deserving of fundamental respect.

AussieSlinger, if you can do that you have considerably more self-control than have I.

Truthfully, in my three years here there have been numerous discussion of religion and politics, some friendly, some acrimonious. A couple of times they have been locked by Chris or one of the moderators. Mostly, members of good will have gently chided whoever was getting rabid, and the discussions were reined in or sometimes ended by mutual consent. There has been no need for a ban, nor do I see one now.

Exactly! We rarely seem to need much as far as moderation or remonstration. I don't think I've ever seen a thread locked due to unfriendly babble.
I think we're a pretty awesome community, actually.

I can see having religious discussions, [i]if[/i the parties involved realize that their views aren't necessarily universal, and that because something may appear in their particular holy book they shouldn't expect everyone to accept it as the undisputed truth.

I have to sat that there seems to be a certain lack of appreciation for the Sermon on the Mount amongst some posters.

I'm not sure if anyone was suggesting banning anything - certainly not me. My earlier post was more an expression of exasperation than anything else.

I took Aussie's reply as maybe a little tongue-in-the-cheek? It is one of the joys of this forum that there is a latitude given to the discussion which one doesn't see in many other places. This has got to be IMHO a good thing.

I tend to stay away from these discussions not because I have little interest in these matters but quite the opposite. There have been some lengthy and frequently enlightening discussions in the threads in the other parts of the forum.

As others observe, the brand of christianity espoused by some here appears to be far more interested in Old Testament than New Testamant principles. It certainly makes dodging the difficult questions easier Wink

I don't think anyone really wants to ban any type of discussion. I think the general consensus is that this forum is improved by the openness of our conversation and the general spirit of respect that goes along with it.
I just figured I'd throw in my lot against the restricting of subject matter before anyone really started to move forward with it. I simply think it would diminish the appeal of our community.

I'm going to be an obnoxious git and hit 3 subjects in one sentence.

For being the huge christian that he is, george bush certainly adds credence to evolution; because I don't believe anything that reminds me that much of a talking monkey could have been purposely created instead of being a throwback.

(notice, this is an example of sarcastic humor, and thus any offense taken is by a guilty conscience. lighten up and laugh.)

OK then to change the subject completely but still keep the subject title intact let me tell you all about my little "slinging doll" daughter. Some time ago Slingbadger was kind enough to send to send us quite a number of Scouting Commemorative cloth badges. This past weekend my daughter went on a Girl Guide camp and one of the leaders saw the badges and got talking. Turns out this lady is a long time Clan of the Cave Bear fan who is extremely keen to try slinging. I now have a tentative booking for a teaching session next weekend. Ties in neatly with the spreading the slinging message thread doesn't it.
