Yes Ladies and Genglefins, there is available now, a David action figure, complete with sling  and stones. It is available through Christian retailers. It also has slinging action in it's arm. ( now all it needs is a kung fu grip)

Funny you should mention that... when I was a kid I had both a David action figure (complete with detachable sling), and a Goliath action figure.  No shield bearer though.  Neither of them had any sort of spring action, but I still thought they were cool.

When in doubt, shoot for the head (worked for David anyway...)

Always puzzles me why Christians are so fascinated by the story of some guy pulverizing another guy's skull with a rock and then cutting his head off. Doesn't seem to fit to well with the idea of turning the other cheek?

We are so facinated by it because the story is not about the power and accuracy of the sling, but the power of G-D triumphing over evil.  Because without the power of G-D behind him, David would have surley missed, with all five stones.

Yes Justin, I know that David was a great fighter for Truth Justice and the Israelite Way and all that, but his actions don't really tie in with what is exemplary Christian behaviour. Killing someone can hardly be considered as following Christ's teachings to pray for your enemies, love your neighbour as yourself, turn the other cheek etc.etc.

Even the notion of the story's being one of God triumphing over evil is by no means clear cut. Nowhere in the account is David ever instructed by God directly, or by any prophet for that matter, to go and fight Goliath, he does it all on his own initiative. David gives God the credit but the people of Israel don't appear to have praised God for the victory at all; the accolades go to David. It certainly was not a direct miracle like the destruction of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea, but very much the action of a human being.

yeah yeah - but where's the picture of the doll in action. And I'm with aussie.
God's hand was not in the fight itself but (bear in mind i'm a sort of not-quite atheist lol) in davids life up to that point. He had the skill with the sling already. The fight was pretty much a formality.
So if god helped him then it was in his being a shepherd and having to use his sling day to day, pre-planning you might say :-)

had to post this article I came across while looking for the david action figure :-)
http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/3319/holy_toyland/
Jesus, who looks remarkably like the Brawny Paper Towel Man, has kung-fu grip and utters soothing but authoritarian Bible quotes, like, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3). This lumberjack-like Jesus made some headlines in 2006 when the Toys for Tots organization (a branch of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve) refused a donation of 4,000 of the dolls for its annual Christmas drive. The irony of turning down Jesus toys for Christmas seems too obvious for comment, but Toys for Tots worried that children on the receiving-end of these donations may not be Christian and therefore it could seem more like a missionary gesture than plain charity. A few days later, however, Toys for Tots reversed its decision and accepted the Jesus dolls, saying simply that they had “found appropriate places for these items.”
You couldn't make it up lol

YES !
I found a page flogging these things :-)))
http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?event=AFF&item_code=WW&item_no=112003&netp_id=478995&p=1027100&view=details

Complete with sheep !

And of course you have to have goliath. Who is 2 inches taller than david. so 5 1/2 inches versus 7 1/2 inches. Actually about right :-)

We just don't get fun stuff like this in england.

One thing that must be remembered is that the Old Testament was a chronicle of the ancient Hebrews, told from their point of view. No equal time for worshippers of Bel Marduk, Dagon, Ashtaroth, Osiris, etc. There's no way that we can know the rightness of the Israelo-Philistine conflict at this late date from a one-sided account.

Heck, David worked as a mercenary for the Philistines, IIRC.

Even in recent history warring nations have claimed to have God on their side; same God, opposite sides.

You know whatever gods there are probably just have their heads in their hands lamenting: 'why do they just fight ? When I gave these idiots free will - it wasn't simply so they could then turn round and dash the brains out of the human next to them. Now where was that dna code I had last week for intelligent guinea pigs - surely they'd be less bloodthirsty.'

I'd like to give this one a whirl but I'm not going to quote sources as the information is in the most widely distributed collection of books in the world. The simple matter of Biblical fact is that the God of the old testament was the God of "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth". He was also the God of the Jews, not the Christians. It is acceptable to Christians  because David conquered 1 man and in essence brought down an army. That might be viewed as a form of mercy from the viewpoints of some modern Christians and hence a miracle of God. It's not so much the violence that is praised, rather the result of an act that seems favorable.

Sorry Wanderer,

Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa.

But I just couldn't resist hvaing a bit of fun and seeing if "doublethink" is still alive and well.

"God so loved the world.......that none should perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)  With the exception of Goliath, Osama bin Laden, etc.etc., generally anyone I don't like.

David kills Goliath........Good!           Goliath threatens to kill David.................Bad!

I second Wanderer's motion that all theological discussion be banned henceforth! I undertake not commence, further or encourage any such discussion even when the most tantalizing travesties of logic are dangled in my face.
