Throwing Stick
Jan 21st, 2008 at 4:12pm

Roll Eyes It's amazing when we start to study Ancient & Paleo weapons that our ancestors used in order to survive and defend. The pictures showing the Palestinians quite successfully using slings against their enemies is an example of a modern adoption of the sling. I started a trend many years back when just walking local woods of picking up and carrying either a hiking staff or a local piece of forest detritus. One day I picked up a piece of local wood that had been cut by someone and left this crooked piece. Not too big and it was sort of shaped like a boomerang ( which would not be a good woods weapon IMHO). So I kept this piece of crooked wood and started to shave off the bark and rendered it fairly smooth, with some carved striations to make a handle to grip. Well I have carried this piece of wood for about 6 years now and I had started to use it as a throwing instrument, you know trying to hit something with regularity. All I can say is that I have gotten to be fairly accurate and during local rabbit and squirrel season I have managed to enjoy rabbit and squirrel stew from the fruits of my throwing stick.    There isn't a heck of a lot of written material out there but they are mentioned in some manuals of survival training and there are suggestions in the modern day US & British Army survival manuals written for the Special Forces group in both countries. Don't know how much this will interest people but, I thought to pass on some personal knowledge I gained over the years. I have never hit any wild game with a sling as of yet, but one day it will happen. BTW I love rabbit and squirrel with dark gravy and corn bread or biscuits. I don't think it gets more primitive than a Throwing Stick, how about you?  Cool

I'm partial to fried rabbit and mashed potatoes with a white cream gravy ... never took a bunny with a stick but have taken them with slingshot (catapult), bow with flu-flu blunts, long gun, hand gun and shotgun .... mmmmm good. I do think that rabbit stick is probably best for small game (except for shotgun) as you don't have to be as accurate; that spinning stick covers a lot of territory and you have to be close to use it.

Sounds like good stuff! It's amazing what can be fashioned into a great weapon... Or just picked up off the ground! There is very little in nature that isn't lethal, in its own way...

ishii,

If you can find it on here (I just looked at it) I posted a summary of an article from American Antiquity Vol. 8 No. 1 July 1942 titled "Grooved Clubs and Modern Rabbit Sticks" by Robert Heizer.

The thread/posting here was on June 23, 2005 called Grooved Clubs and Rabbit Sticks. Sorry, I don't know how to post links to other threads here yet.
By the way I just came back to western NY after living out of state for 3 years, so I've been away from this board for many months.

Hope you find it interesting.
biscuits.
For the europaens and brits out there - american biscuits are actually savoury scones :-)
For the americans - a biscuit in england is a cookie :-)

And yeah rabbit is good lean meat. But squirrel ?
Got to draw the line somewhere :-)

Well the australian aborignes have been usning throwing sticks for 10'000 years or so. And if you've ever seena  hunting boomerang it's a heavy slightly curved piece of wood that doesn't come back.

Ah but do you mean a biscuit or do you mean a biscuit !
Two very different things :-)

I suppose the original throwing stick might well have been a carved animal bone. Makes you wonder which came first the throwing rock or the throwing stick.
