Axel,

Beautiful work!

It's great to see someone actually use one of my tutorials. I'm with David about the woven finger tab. I think it's a handsome looking feature.

A simple leather and paracord sling.  "H" style crossover pouch, punched with 3/32" holes.  Bowline finger loop, Perfection Loops on pouch, Turk's Head stopper knot (Ashley 545) on the release cord.

The beat sling is really beautiful! How many strands in what kind of braid? Also, how did you taper the release cord so evenly?

If you'd like deep brown to black try gathering the green walnut husks and boiling them in water. It makes a very nice dye. Add some alcohol if you store it to prevent mold, and make sure and store it in a plastic container sitting on a towel because it will expand and you'll have a mighty mess!

thanks, i was surprised at how virbrant the color came out myself.  the color holds up great to wear long as it doesnt get wet.  its 4 strands at first then folded over into 8 strands after making the loop.  its a round braid i think sometimes called chainbraid.
does it look tapereed?  maybe i braided the last bit a little tighter.
thanks for the tip on walnuts, ill have to try that!

what type of braid did you use? and how did you place you strands together to make that pattern?

i always use a 4 strand round braid now, its my favorite, takes alot more work than a flat braid but it makes the cords so tight and stiff they stay well away from each, or maybe its the pouch that does that, either way it makes reloading very quick and direct, no fumbling around or limp cords crossing and dangling.
i put 2 strands of each color, forget how i arrange them i just did it and it comes out like that.  and if you arrange them in the opposite way it makes a diamond pattern instead of spiral.
also first time i used 2 strands on the pouch, not only did that give the cool pattern like RockMan does, it works good with wool because it can be compacted alot, whereas 2 strands of cotton would likely be too thick.
also did the whipping with 2 strands to give the same effect.
the cord is like a snake, pouch is like tiger.  Cool

Eary last week I braided two slings from grass.  To test how functional they are I have used one of them a couple of times.  It have worked above my expectations.  But today I experienced a release cord breakage during a figure-8.  It was propably due to a weak point in the braiding.
I solved the problem by doing an "in the field" repair by braiding a new tip on the sling with grass found on-site.  It took me a couple of minutes.

After that I continued slingin for a little time.  But there is grass and there is grass, I do not think the new grass was as tough as the original.    It will soon be retired.
But I proved to myself that if I had a time machine accident or was shipwreched, I could make a simple working grass sling.  And with some practice in making them, they could be rather reliable.

In my foto the grass sling, and the defect part, is shown with a similar size sling, made from 6 thin hemp cords, tapered the_warrior_yety way, wich means smooth and elegant.

...

Here's a "Balearic" sling I made recently following the tutorial found here:
http://www.mallorcaweb.net/foners/ferfona/00_Aferfona.htm

I don't know how he managed to stitch that leather onto his sling with such thick thread! Tongue

Donnerschlag, nice sling. It occurred to me while watching the Balearic Maker of Slings video, that Diego also had leather stitched onto the sling he's using at the end.
