Here's my latest Balearic, made for a buddy.

5 skeins each of 6 strands of jute. 32" from loop to centre of pouch. Lined with kangaroo leather. I spliced some white dacron into the release cord to increase wear resistance and extend the life of the cracker.

The tassle is about 6-8 inches long. Does a shorter cracker give a better whipcrack? I could get it to crack with an overhand throw but not with a sidearm or Balearic throw.

I also think I should have cut the leather for the pouch a bit wider, so it extended around the sling a bit more. No matter, it will fling a thing.

Looks good! Never even thought about kangaroo leather, but I suppose you can tan just about anything huh?

As for the crack I've found longer is generally easier to get to crack, but that it also has a lot to do with the angle of your wrist on release. Especially if you can get it to crack with one style and not another, try rotating your wrist both directions on release and see if you can get the crack to come out a little more on the other style.

Yeah kangaroo leather is under 1 mm thick, and is 40% stronger than cow leather per mass, and is more wear resistant and less stretchy.

Reportedly.

I bought 2 kg of offcuts in different colours, plus a few full skins for $250. Even the scraps have pieces long enough to make slings, and enough to make pouches for years and years.

One of the side effects of having this hobby is that pebbled surfaces look incredibly appealing.

There are decorative pebbled squares around planted trees in a square in my home town with pebbles just the perfect size and shape. Every single time I walk past those I get the urge to just sling one across the square.

I may actually take a photo next time.
