Welcome!
The sling design might be "run of the mill". But it's also one of general designs that could be called simple elegance. Basic, but very effective!
Do you hold the retention ball between the middle and ring finger?
Can't wait to see your other design ideas!
Yup! Hold it in my palm with the cord between the middle and ring fingers. The retention cord terminates in a simple overhand knot that sits on a small rounded washer which then sits inside the ball. This also adds the little quirk/feature that the entire retention cord has the ability to spin freely on its own axis. I like to think this leads to a cleaner release, but in truth I'm not sure if it actually makes a difference there. Don't seem to hurt at any rate. It does make it a bit easier to align the pouch right when first picking up the sling, unlike finger loops where sometimes you put them on backwards and have to take em off and flip em, with this you can just spin the whole thing til it lines up properly.
I find the ball toggle works best on short to medium length slings and with a Byzantine-esque throw, which is what I normally do. I add a little backwards windup first--basically pendulum swinging the sling out behind me, before transitioning into a single overhead rotation that releases in a high sidearm. I'm much more accurate doing this the toggle ball than with anything else, but this throw doesn't work as well for me with longer slings. When using a longer sling (say 30 inches or more) I usually do more of a Ballearic type throw with a few pre-rotations, and for that I like a classic single finger loop.
Here's a much better pic of the toggle ball sling, along with an absolutely gorgeous 35" paracord beauty I just got from David The Shepherd!
