Oh, I see. I also don't care for the cupped pouch.
I make mine twined pouches with a "butterfly pattern" but I scrunch up the wings before removing the sticks. This makes the pouch flat.

After trying both designs, I do not at all understand why a sling would be woven to be cupped. A flat woven sling will accept a radius nicely, but does not hinder the release anything like as much as the former. It does not make sense to me.

your remark is interesting. I throw ovoids at a target at 20 meters and I've never had release problem. Are there cases where this form in unsuitable and which ?

Neil Anir, your Mk1 has a fantastic look.

By making the pouch cupped, it makes the release slower. They are also more vulnerable to hang-ups, since it doesn't open as easily.
It isn't necessary, so why do it?

So you can do this!  Grin

On a serious note, I do like cupped pouches better for spherical projectiles.  A split pouch definitely works too, but doesn't hold as securely.  The trade off is that the release may not be as clean, as you mentioned.

Neil Anir, I love your Mk1. So if you want use it, you must use spherical, ovoid or biconic projectiles. And enjoy.

If you use bad stones, better leather pockets (smoother) and more resistant to abrasion.

Just my idea, It's up to you to test.

Yes I agree for spherical projectiles its not a problem, and with something very low friction like ice, the release difference would be much less noticeable. However when using something like stones, especially smaller ones, the effect is most noticeable. I just don't get it needs to be make cupped when a flat bed sling will sink slightly in the middle to hold something like a tennis ball securely.

@AA - Just curious, would you consider an Egyptian style sling (like the one Acro makes in this video: https://youtu.be/ttqhH_W8264) to be a cupped pouch.

Yes, as well as the originals (aside from Petrie Lahun 800BC) That's what confuses me.
Obviously the cupped pouch was popular in Egypt, but I don't see a reason to make them like that unless your doing acrobatics.

If the Egyptians used it, is that probably these slings were adapted to their projectiles. If it doesn't work for you, is that they are not suitable for the use that you expect.

That's not at all how I feel. But of course, I can be wrong.

From personal experience, this is what I understand from this model.
1) Without being rigid, the pouch doesn't bend much. There is therefore no problem of opening.
2) By a spike, a bad pebble could get caught in a "mesh". That why I use only round slingstones.
Anyway, it works for me.

Thank you all ✨, it's getting better every time.  My slings are all the same design, except that the weaving quality and strength improve each time.

I think the most difficult thing is to weave "Egyptian style sling"  Smiley
