A slinging session. 100 stones. 23m target, sofa-sized graffito. One rotation sidearm. 33% hit rate. Bah.

Just curious, have you ever tried a Y or T pouch sling ? the stones you throw seem like an excellent candidate for a sling that puts less spin on the projectile. Whenever I have such stones and used a conventional sling it felt terrible, the thicker and fatter the sling the worse it got. it even screws with my long term practice, because of the erratic release screwing with the release timing in my head (because while my release could have been perfect, the path the stone took was random, so I thought I released wrong, and I adjust my release automatically, while it wasn't the release timing that needed adjustment) , this creates this terrible feedback loop dilemma. Solution is either to use consistent ammo or really reduce internal friction (and target distance, but which at 20 m, seems pretty minimal already) and or heavier ammo. Consistent ammo, while amazing, and really makes a sling shine, is hard to get, so I prefer the solution of reducing internal friction by T pouch, and heavier rocks, at least 150g. If one doesn't desire a change in pouch design, I'd recommend at least 150g rocks, possibly slimmer cords wich also reduce spin, and more of a lob throw.

At 15m, I stand a pretty good chance of hitting my target.
At 20 m, I hit the target maybe 40%
At 23-4m, I hit the target 20-33% of the time.

Question: what is the best distance at which to practice ? Usually I 'm at 23m just because of the shade, but I wonder if I should be closer.

Your results are correct with your equipment because :

I can be wrong, maybe the photo isn't good but your sling seems "ended badly". Too tight in places and too loose in others. Perhaps it is normal with this type of sling. I think that a pouch made with leather is better with this stones. This prevent an angle of the pebble from hanging a wire that protudes. But it's just my idea.

On the other hand, working with these stones is very formative. Hard to control, the slinger has to be even better. The design of the sling is important.

I'm agree with Lacumo. These stones are nice.

You may well be right ! I should try slinging with my authentic balearic sling and see if I'm better !

I sometimes train with bad stones on a rock about 30 meters. My results are equivalent to yours. With my cement eggs, it would be 100 %. But for me, the challenge is formative.

A balearic sling is a good idea. Because the fibers are tightened and oriented "in the axis" of the path of the stone. Just my idea.

I am interseted by your new results and your conclusions. There is a small technical question about the sling.

In fact, there is no mystery: at 20m, using my woven sling and irregular ammo, 40% of my shots fit within a big target, but at 23-25m, more shots hit left and right, ie. I've moved to the point that my dispersion of shots is wider than the target.

Inspired by  HaifischKuchen on his utube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6kdRs4x1fs
I made this sling from leather and 550 paracord.
Leather coloured using water proof ink from a felt tip marker.

The pouch pattern is 7.23 inches by 1 inch.
Sling length folded is 59 cm.

Space is limited here. I made some bean bags to throw. From some high vis. fabric, filled tightly with navy beans. After playing with patterns, this shape was achieved.
The pattern was developed from a square 2 3/8 inches or 60 mm. 2 11/16" or 68.5 mm outside. The camber is 5/32 inches each or 4 mm. One camber added to each edge. Add a seam allowance to the pattern seen here for sewing.

Saw this slinger image else where here on a square patch. I reworked it. Is now on an outline I traced from an ancient bullet image.

Are you going to actually use that image on something, or were you just playing around it?  Just curious.  I like the adjustments you made.  It almost looks more like a Balearic style throw than the original.
