Here's my prototype of a captive release Y-noodle.† One piece of paracord, just twisted and knotted.† The captive release was an afterthought.† I meant to cut off the excess to just make a Y-noodle, but figured I'd conserve the paracord and try captive release for the first time.† It worked better than I thought it would.† Really well, in fact.† It releases about 30 degrees earlier than I'm used to, but I can adapt.† After I get the hang of making them with 220 paracord, I'll try with 3-strand jute twine.† I think I'll like the feel better, and the knots will hold tighter.

As soon as I figure out how I made it (I was just noodling at the time), and refine my method, I'll post a tutorial.

I really like your design and I have a suggestion: Have the ball rest only on the forward two lines of the pouch. Leave the retention cord slightly slack. Make the forward most line rest as far back in the cradle as possible (not so far that it doesn't hold the ball).

Also, don't listen to anything I say! I have never used a y-sling. Unless you count my shotgun sling...

Hmm... I hadn't thought of that.  My intention with the two lines was to keep the whole construction to one cord for a true noodle.  I intended the pair to be the release ledge together as a single body.  I never intended to use them separately.

Good catch.  I'll give that a try and see what it does.

Either way, I look forward to your tutorial so I can make one myself.

Nope, the two sideways strands are too close together to hold a tennis ball securely.† Maybe one of my little squishy balls, but they're all on the wrong side of the fence in a thicket.† I don't feel like modifying this prototype to fiddle with the length, so I'll make another one designed to follow your idea.† Also, you gave me another idea for a refinement to make the release cord less cumbersome at the hand.† Funny thing is, too, even when I don't use the captive release, the ball flies true because it doesn't have to push the cord out of the way and it flies while the release cord just flops.† Cool!†

I also want to tip my hat to J for inspiring me to fiddle with Y-slings in the first place. Thanks, J!

Cool. If u do find the time to make those changes, know that it may amplify a problem a lot of y-slings have (I think). That is: controlling the orientation of the cradle. I don't know if it matters or if it will be an issue.

Again, u really shouldn't listen to me!

We should pull J in on this.  One of his observations was that  the Y-sling doesn't give the projectile nearly as much spin as a standard sling, so I'd think that cradle orientation is less of an issue.  That's why it works well with irregular stones: less magnus effect.

That's what I found too. The ammo i just dropped rather than rolling out. The super early release time is also what I found with y slings.

Damn, Mike!  What a piece of art!  Is there any instructions online on how to make that design?

My favorite slings. The blue one was crocheted. The brown one is an asymmetrical split pouch made by twinning over sticks.
