yes, in my opinion it's ideal for bad rocks

huh. not what I was expecting. I was imagining putting them in sort of behind the two cords, which in retrospect makes no sense.

the Y-sling, at least mine, dumps whatever I've loaded into the pouch almost immediately through the split, as I let go of the release trigger. No matter the orientation of the cords, it's equal in all directions. So it never fouls as a result of cord interference.

It's the sling reduced to its most basic form.  This one doesn't provide real noteworthy spin action on the projectile. So it's really a simple form of slinging. It gives a very direct throw. The powerstroke is optimal. No need to release early to compensate for any release friction really

It'll sling just about anything just like one can load anything in a smoothbore gun barrel and shoot it. But don't expect a bullet like spin. More like a tumble-spin.
I am restarting to think that it is beneficial for short distance target throwing, lets say 30 meters, maybe 50 meters, and that's where it would really shine in my opinion and actually feels like cheating compared to a regular sling. Only on longer distances I really notice the lack of spiral spin on the projectile,  cuts on the range and accuracy of flight path.  Due to the lack of stabilizing spin I don't recommend light rocks with this sling. They are more easily beaten off course by the wind. Go 150 g or heavier.

it has various names on this site, captive release sling, Y-sling, T-sling, with the letter corresponding to the shape of the pouch. I didn't invent it.
The release cord is captive, meaning it's secured to the retention cord and only drops a few inches on release allowing the ammo to pass out of the sling.
left: sling with projectile loaded
right: sling in released state

Made a smiling sling from plastic cord (works very well)
its about 20" wich is the ideal lenght for target shooting (at least for me)
I only had blue string, but will try to get some orange string too (makes it look better)

I prefer a flat braid, but the original is a 4 strand round braid (mine is 16 strand at the start, 28 at the pouch,16 after the pouch and 9 at the end)

did some more testing:
the sling works well with all kinds of ammo and is very consistent. It is completely silent. the weight of the sling is 12 gramms.

i think this will be my new edc

Nice MikeG! I also made a smiling sling once, mine was more accurate to the original as it was made of paracord with that four strand round braid, double fingerloop and the pouch being woven split pouch and not braided then a big knot with whipcracker. That sling worked very well but I found my standart balearics to crack louder and work better when not using bad stones. Also the fact that practical paracord smiling slings are so heavy made it not very good for distance slinging. But I want to try to make it out of my standart sisal twine I use for balearics, I think that yould make an interesting sling.

J I tried lots of different styles of sling but never tried the y-pouch. You motivate me to try it on my next leather and paracord sling once I get some leather so I can make the y-pouch. I never really cared for them seeing them as more of a novelty sling but now I really want to try it as it seems that my idea of them was wrong.
