Sorry not a picture, more lots of pictures one after the other. Didn't realise my girlfriend was filming the tadpoles and she managed to get me doing fig 8 Cheesy

By the way if any of you ever find yourselves in Helsinki go to Lauttasari island. Beautiful scenery and lots of good sling stones.

These were the sort of size stones I was using. Pretty small but I only had a short sling with quite a small pouch.

Hi there,
I wanted an adjustable sling, so I've made one. It's nothing fancy though, but works well for EDC.

Sling is adjustable in the range of 50-100 cm (20-40 in). Picture setup is for 80 cm (31 in).
The cords are 3 mm and for pouch I've used 2 stripes 15x2,5 cm (5.9x1 in), all from polypropylene.

Knots used are: portuguese bowline for the loop, double overhand as a stopper knot and tautline hitch with extra loop for gripping to cord. Ends of the cords are melted for neat look.

Despite the slippery and splitting of the pouch the sling throws nearly everything. I've lost a few stones, but i guess it's due to me being lame and also some of the projectiles were really small, because I've used what I found.

That being said, I'll probably sniff around now for some leather. I was thinking about one 4 mm layer or two of 2 mm thickness (I dont know the US equivalent), but it'll be probably too stiff. So, if I may ask, how thick are your leather pouches? Also, is there a rule which side (the rough one or the outer one) works better for the inside of the pouch?

Cheers.

That looks awesome! Great way to make it adjustable as well. I remember seeing a YouTuber say that the rough side can be used for smoother stones and the smooth side for rough stones but to be honest I just use the rough side and keep the smooth side looking nice.

Thank you kindly.

In your experience (or anyone's else), does the rough side have the advantage? Because I'm wondering - putting the slipping out stones issue aside - how increased friction affects the throws from the physics point of view. I've read topic about riffle spinning, so I guess the more friction the better, but it's only assumption.

On the other hand, I've seen A LOT of balearic slings with 'shiny' side of leather attached upwards.

The rough side of leather holds and grips the ammo better

I've always used smooth/shiny side up for pouches. I just don't like the idea of the nice soft side on muddy/rough stones.

If you make the pouch right it will basically never drop stones anyway.

Really there are so many variables I don't know how well it can be worked out. How rough is rough? What size are the stones? What type of rock? How worn is the leather? All these things could influence it so I think best thing to do is just experiment and see what you prefer.

Thanks for the help, guys!

I was just considering if there is a rule, like it is with elasticity ('the less stretch in sling, the better'), so I could include the knowledge from the step one, which is the design process. If there was a dogma in this field, everyone would be like "what are you, dumb? use this or that and nothing else"  Grin

Since it seems to be more up to preferences, I won't be worrying about doing it the wrong way.

I realised I hadn't got around to posting one of my newer slings which is really a crime as it's now one of my favourites. It's a pretty simple braided sling that I've made... well not quite a hundred times before but I'm getting there Cheesy This one is a little different from it's predecessors though. I believe Jaegoor made a sling a fair while ago with a handle instead of a retention loop and it really inspired me so I finally got around to making my version with a piece of reindeer antler. It's pretty short, about 88cms from antler handle to release knot, which makes it perfect for Apache style. I'm still getting use to holding the antler rather than the loop, but I really like it and is definitely a favourite in my collection (I think I have enough slings now to officially label it a collection Cheesy ).

Nice. What's the sling made of?

Regular cotton string. Almost all of my slings are made of it actually just because it's cheap, easy to buy (or for my dad to steal from his work's store cupboard...) and it's thick enough that the finished sling has a good amount of mass but thin enough that it doesn't end up monstrous.

So the time has come to make my first balearic attempt. I'm for sure going to exploit this type a lot because I just love the look.

This one is made of 2 mm jute cordage. Almost tightiest 5-braid I could make, 10 strands for the loop, doubled for the retension, doubled again before the pouch. Release tapered to 5 single strands. I may decide to add some pouch covering though.

Functional lenght is 87 cm (34 in). Release is another 26 cm (10 in) longer. Sling weights 85 g (3 oz).

I've spotted some mistakes so I'll improve in the future. Also, I can tell that jute won't be my favourite material.

Anyways, hope you like it!
