With this sling (reply 3775) Pikaru motivated me to give a design from the Cook's Island (from Rarotonga to be precise) another try.

So here it is: A Rarotonga-inspired sling out of linen string. I was using odds and ends remaining from the Lahun project so it was a bit of using up the storage.
The dimension and the materials do not match the original one, but it is more or less the same pattern. The original pouch shall have been 210 mm long and 66 mm wide, which is, in my opinion, gigantic. This pouch is 14 cm long and, when stretched, 4.5 cm wide. The folded length of the sling is 70 cm.

The sling performs well, but not perfect. Due to the vast amount of material used (11 individually braided lengths, consisting each out of 5 threads), the pouch is, compared to other designs, rather heavy. Also it is not very fast in the release. It would be nice to try this design with another, lighter material to replace the braided strips and compare the results.

The style you described is the "mallorcan" style, which is used by the majority of balearic slingers. However, the "menorcan" style (used by Luis) is wearing the fingerloop ont the middle finger. Nevertheless, even with their "across the palm" style there is some cord left hanging, presumably for durability and easier repair.

WOW!. That sling is awesome. Very detailed in its construction. Nice work.

schöne arbeit,probier es mal mit hanf oder anderem garn.ich kenn das auch vom leinen und deshalb verwende ich es nur noch gemischt mit anderen garnen.

@Tomas
so that the pouch is not unnecessarily rigid, should the spacing of the steel pins about 3 to 4 times the diameter of the yarn to be.
with the exception of wool.

@Pikaru: The idea came from the wikipedia definition of sennit: cordage made by plaiting strands of dried fibre or grass. As I had no coconut I used linen.
@Hubert: Thanks for the tip! I will try to find some thin hemp yarn. The hemp string in my store is too thick for this kind of work.
