Wow!!! Leather. Tut slings. Balearic. Rockman. All of them look great!

I couldn`t post during the last two weeks, so I`ll show some new slings.

Well, the ones on this picture are not really new. I made them a month ago, but forgot to put them in the picture thread.

Two middle eastern style shepherd slings. The upper one is made from jute and cotton as is more cupped than the "zebra" which is woven with black and (formerly) white cotton.

A very simple, fast made recycled-handbag-sling . It was also made some weeks ago and throws well.

My newest split pouch slings, one peruvian style, one balearic with leather and one I call the "cupped split pouch" or the "semi-solid-pouch". Itīs o.k. for bigger stones but has a delayed release with smaller ammo.

A little idea for an alternative way to make a release tab with three strings only. It's already an older idea and I have never used it in a sling, so feel free to figure out how it was made and use it.  Wink

Did anybody figure this out? I'd like to know more...

My guess is that the tab part is finger woven or plaited. Both tend to be a bit wider than a braid and trasnstioning is pretty easy so thats what I'd do. I've also seen a couple that were just woven normally like a Rockman pouch.

I was pretty good at slinging like 10 years ago.

It could be like this:

Lakeslinger, that's perfect! It's made in exactly the same way as you drew it.
The technique is called: "Doppelschlaufig verschlingendes Wulsthalbflechten, umfassend" (German, taken from: Systematik der Textilen Techniken, A. Seiler-Baldinger, 1991).
In english there are several names for this (and similar) techniques:
- Mousing knot (Mason, 1908)
- Figure-of-eight wrapping (Collingwood 1968)
- Mariposa weave (Navajo school 1972)

Thanks, Teg.
I figured it out today (during breakfast) theoretically on a piece of paper, then later I tried it with a real cord.
Do you have any experience, if itīs solid enough for a split pouch? That would be a fast way to make one,
e.g. like Dan wrote, for a Rockman.

I have never used it in a sling, only in several smaller example pieces (which I unfortunately threw away Cry ). If I remember correctly this fabric is a bit easier to twist (in torsional direction) than normal weave of the same width. But I think it should work out well. If you take normal polyester packing string it will be around 1 cm wide. One problem you could encounter is sliding of the wrapping, especially with synthetic material. So I'd suggest to work rather tight.

When I tried it I wanted to work with thinner string than showed in this example. And then it would have been not wide enough to be useful for a pouch, but only to enlarge the strings to make a release tab out of a three strand braid, without having to add additional material or making a complex weave.

Today I finished this sling. It`s made of jute, except the pouch whippings, which are flax. Following the description on paleoplanet about the reproduction of an etruscan sling I changed the dimensions of the pouch for smaller than tennisball ammo. I started with 6-strands, formed the loop, braided 12 strands for some inches, then continued with 6 until shortly before the pouch. There I started adding more strands up to 18. Instead of using 18 separate cords, I took only 9. The center of each one was crossed with the main braid and then treated like if there were two separate strands added. So less knotting / splicing was necessary. The pouch is 2x3 strands in the center and 3x3 in each outer part, then again combined to 24, tapered to first 6, then 5 and finally 4 strands at the release end. Before the release knot a small tab was woven, using 3 strands as warps and 1 as weaving cord. At last I stabilized the pouch with flax whippings. It looks very ancient and weapon-like. Letīs see how it slings...
