Here's my new Pacific Islander style sling. I used thick hemp so its a really beefy sling.

I really like it.  Cool

Totally, couldn't have done it without. I originally made a really long pouch for tennis balls but I didn't really like it and I forgot to sew in the cords together so after some light handling the pouch was a tangled mess.
So I just undid the release cord, made the pouch smaller and it works great now.

I threw a few different shape and size rocks and it handled them like a champ. Its kinda heavy so it release a bit late but, its nothing that can't be compensated for by some slight changes in throwing style.

Just started in slinging and making a few.

First one in 550 paracord
...

Second in jute
...

Third in sisal
...

550 is very compact for carrying and gives a nice finished look but I'm drawn more toward natural materials. Jute was real nice to work with. Sisal was interesting due to the coarse and 'hairy' material. I found that using a flame to singe off the hairs after completion made a big difference in the finished appearance. The jute material didn't need it. Anxious to try more materials and styles, and gaining more experience throwing  Smiley

Man, Neandertad...  If that's your first couple of slings ever made, then you may give Master Teg a run for his money after you get some experience under your belt.  My first slings didn't look quite as good as these(actually, they were quite ridiculous!  LOL).

I don't think I've posted this one here yet.  SquirrelSlinger posted a pic of it in the Christmas Sith thread a bit ago, but I think it should also reside here in this thread.

I am most proud of this sling than any other.  It is a heavy thing and quite possibly the most perfect tennis ball thrower I have ever seen or handled.  It also makes the whip crack like nobody's business on even moderate throws.  I'm glad I gave this one away to Squirrel because if I had kept it, she'd be hanging from my wall just looking pretty.  And this is one sling that deserves to get busy and stay busy...

Anyway, here she is...  The Christmas Sling...

Thanks for the nice compliments guys. I was inspired by what I've seen here.

LightSlinger-
Nice use
of color
! I'm curious about the change in weave on the release side. Is it a historical or beneficial method, or a creative 'style'?

walter- after making the second sling (Dan Bollinger 'braided sling') I just thought I would add a few more strands on the third sling and make the pocket with three bands.

Pikåru- I picked up your method of using flame from your blog tutorial  Smiley  I picked up more jute yesterday and getting ready to try the Chamorro! I just need to learn that 5-strand weave.

Actually, it's a very good thing you asked.  You may find my answer helpful...  I am a fan of symmetry so it actually grieves me a little to change the braiding pattern like you see done on the Christmas sling.  However, it's necessary(for me anyway).  The reason is this;  when you taper your release cord down by using less strands to braid with, you create a lighter (and usually) thinner release cord.  This helps to make  the release cleaner and quite a bit faster.  You will find that using a tapered release cord is kind of like power steering in a car.  So, on the Christmas sling, I started with only four strands (because the cordage I used is very thick stuff, probably a 1/4"), then tapering down to three strands, then down to two...

I kinda figured it had to do with the taper but your photo confused me for a bit. I thought it went 4 > 2 > 3 > 2. On closer review I see now how it's tapering from 4 > 3 > 2  Cheesy

Made this yesterday, I shall call it cookies and creme Cheesy. The folks picked me up a roll of heavy duty non fray mason line, and this came out of it. I've always had a thing for the Egyptian style of slings, for some reason.
