Good effective designs tend to last especially in a region not only famous fo it's slinging but for still using the sling up till modern times.

Marc Adkins

Quote:
that sling from Israel is probably based on a common design that is used in the area,

compare it with these palistinian slings:

pretty similar...

not that i know of.
this is on the island of Lokrum, in front of city Dubrovnik in Croatia.

the local suicide spot is on the cliffs in the town ;

water is deep, but i don't know how important is it if you are not a pro jumper (30+m height).

that's one of the reasons why my release is a bit held back. (the other one is that i'm rusty)

David Morningstar,

a nearly 4000 year old sling! That is incredible! Do you have more information on and pictures of that? Is that the original sling or a replica? Is the kind of fiber known or the material of the sling shots? How long is the sling in total and in detail? It wozuld be fascinating to try to make a replica.
Until now I only knew the sling of Tut Anch Amun (1300 B.C.) and of Lahun (900 B.C.). Another sling was found in Switzerland of the Latène period (about 900 B.C.).

I queried with the curator of the collection whether it was original or a replica, and she confirmed it is original. It is on display in Manchester Museum near me but I havent been able to get even half a day when they are open to go and see it! Photography is allowed without flash so when I do go I will have lots of hi-res pictures to share. Everything I know so far I have posted with the picture.

Nope.....

"It is preserved in the Petrie Museum in University College London, no. UC.6921, and was excavated from El Lahun in the Fayum in Egypt in 1914.... Only the loop end of the cord and the cradle survive"

Note that the Manchester sling has simple twisted cords whereas the Petrie Lahun sling and its replica use elaborate braided cords.

As mentioned on the other thread where we are talking about this sling the pics I have of the Lahun sling are copies of copies so it's real hard to see the detail of the cords.

Now both you and Funda are claiming this isn't the same sling as the one in the Petra Lahun sling.

Now I know that the Manchester Sling is attributed to being found at a site in El-Lahun. So we have two slings that look similar from the same site?  Stranger things have happened. Although I would recomend that we move further discussion to this thread

I managed a couple of quick chucks by the River Worfe today with my Dad on camera duty.  Apache before.... (my feet are probably too far apart to be ideal)

....and after! The sling I am using is a dinky little 19 incher with bootlace cords and a skinny leather slit pouch I made up from offcuts from another project. I have been spurning shorties since my first efforts at slinging were with one about this size and I was rather disappointed. I'm doing much better with this one so my technique must have improved. That my theory and I'm sticking to it!

Use a fast shutter setting. 1/250th of a second works well.  Those pics were taken using the cameras 'Sport mode' which is good for capturing fast action.
