Great looking sling, biface;
  Below is a Cobra that I made for LukeWebb.  At first I thought that it was too ugly to send.. the sisal whipping came out thicker and fuzzier than I wanted, the knot on the retention side of the pouch came out bigger than normal, and I accidentally cut the retention cord a few inches shorter than I meant to.  I decided to keep it for myself.
   As I started using it I discovered that it worked great.  It shoots true, has great range for a shorter sling (29") and gives a mighty bull whip crack with ease.  In that it was originally made for Luke, I felt guilty about keeping it.  I think that if Luke can get over it not being my most beautiful sling ever, he'll enjoy it much.

To facilitate the taper I drop strands out of the weave from the back as I complete the pouch.  Here's a rear view of the sling:

Next is an experiment.  I have miles of that cheap jute cord, so I braided a length of it and tied it into a pj sling (five strand sheep shank) and wove it with more jute, then whipped it with... jute.  I thought that it would be a junk sling, but it works great.

Rat Man, darn, seems like you make some really well made heavy duty slings Smiley

biface.silex, that was something.  I believe you about fiddly-diddly-ziddly work on that pouch Wink

walter, why was you bothered by weaving on three warps on your pouch?  I have done that after Rockman suggested it and has never looked back.

This is a picture I took two weeks ago in a museum in Werl (Western Germany, about 120 km north-east of Cologne). It is from Tibet and made from wool, dated in the 20th century. Unfortunately I didn't get out more information. The sling is pretty unusual, as it is thick and heavily decorated. Thus it looks as if used rather for decoration or celebration than for allday serious slinging.

@ratman:
thx for the compliment.
Your jute slings look a lot more authentic though;)

@all:
a lot of that specialized vocabulary is still quite unknown to me, it'll take a while to get used to.

biface.silex, I've never made a sling in one day. Usually takes me about 3 or 4 days. A couple hours here and there. Figure out just what exactly I'm trying to do, cut the cords to length, make the finger loop and at least some of the retention cord. Next day the pouch and maybe the release cord and then the whipping etc.

timann, the hemp cord I used is real narrow and like wire, so I was having a bad time coming around the outside warps without pulling them in and at the same time getting the weave tight. In my op, three warps is ok with thicker softer material. I've done it that way before, but I really like four warps. Especially when the splits are an inch wide or more.

Ahem, is there some kind of a step-by-step tutorial for this style of sling?

This is my version of the Rockman's sling I made a few days ago (my first sling). It's made out of jute and hemp and the beads are red agate. It works great!!!

Welcome, pdmcgrane;
    Most of us picked something easier than a rockman for our first sling.  Good for you, and good job.  The beads on the cords are an interesting touch.

Hah hah, thank you for the compliments! Yeah I admit there were easier ones to make, but I found this kind of sling very aesthetically appealing to me. It was a little frustrating when it came to weaving the pouch, but it was worth it.
