Usually I prefer my slings +/- 27", which work great for my normal slinging. But I do sometimes use longer slings, when I can safely go for slightly longer distances. My current 40" and 50" slings are leather pouch/poly cord things, but I made this 40" rather thin Rockman type from hemp with jute fittings today. I just had time for a couple of shots with it, but so far it seems to work great.

I've made 2 Rocman slings with the jute material and I must say I have terrible luck with natural fibers. Once I think I'm done, I see slack appear in the pouch area. The fiber spreads all over the place when I'm working it, and my wife makes sure to remind me of it...constantly..
So far I prefer synthetic fiber, #2 550 cord is the best.

Hemp, on the other hand, has given me better results. timann

Cords and warps are hemp, weft is genuine wool from genuine Welsh sheep, untreated, uncombed, unwashed, unspun, just plucked from the barbed wire fence, twisted into cord and then twist-woven around the warps. Smells authentic and performs surprisingly well.

For distance slings, I don´t extend the lenght of the sling, I reduce the diameter. Equal lenght and equal degree of control, but since one is lighter, in theory, it send projectiles farther. But it has been a long time since I´ve made or used a really long sling, so I´ll make one

A long time ago I braided a long and thick sling intended for distance. It did not help increase distance at all, but it could manage heavy ammo Wink

The sling in the picture above is thin for its length, and send things rather far, but so far only if I use figure-8(!).

PS Funny, I just found a picture of my old 40" sling, made in the summer 2008. Leather crossover strap pouch, adjustable leather finger loop, poly cords. I have tied and retied it several times, as my knowledge and loop finger preferences has changed. Last in use early this week.

Just finished this hemp split pouch sling. The darker colored hemp is just 1mm and has a hard finish, so it was a bear to work with (think thin kinky wire). Think I know how to deal with it now though. There are five dark and three natural doubled cords in this one. Used a double end knot (thanks PJ) for the release. Finished length is 28.25 inches. Three quarters more than I was shooting for. Roll Eyes

The pouch straps are one inch at the widest. I tried three warp cords on this one, but should have used my usual four Roll Eyes

Had some trouble there.

LOL Fundi, I'm glad your new sling performs well; that authentic odor is likely to attract some very large predators with very long canines Grin

Well folks,
eventually I managed to finish my first Tutanchamen-Style-Sling and upload some pics:

It's far from being near perfect, especially the rim of the pouch, but it sure was some fiddly-diddly-biddly-ziddly thingy to fumble with Wink

I hope the next one will turn out better, as I have decided to take thinner cords to get a finer weaving result. I will also use more colours, it might help prevent the muddling up which led to the chaotic pouch rim.
