I've been braiding around with jute a bit lately and tried some split pouches. Nothing special, really, but they work pretty well.

V nice ! How is the pouch done ? Is it two woven half-pouches ?

I like braiding and weaving-- it obviously exercises the brain in some way

Thanks!

Yes, Jaegoor, it would be great to have some slinging reunions in Europe. Smiley

Thearos, no, the pouch is hand-woven in one piece. The method I use, though, I adapted from basket-making (don't even know how it is called). Instead of weaving one thread through the strands, I double the thread and twist it around each of the strands. Maybe here you see what I mean

http://www.youtube.com/user/BushcraftOnFire#p/a/f/2/kgO1O1Jl3Ks (the "twisting" starts at about 1.18)

I get a very tight "tissue" for the pouch with this method, and I find it easier and more forgiving. I can even use short pieces of thread and different colours. The split is optional; I made another sling for smaller projectiles without it (and with a monochrome pouch) and one with an Aussie-style pouch.

And, yes, I agree completely with the effect of braiding/weaving on the mind.

What is the advantage of this "double twist around the weft" technique, as opposed to a simple "push the strand through' weave ?

I finished this sling a while back and I liked it, so I figuered I'd post it.  This was my first time making one like this and I did some things wrong that I will fix when I get aroung to making another one.  A little heavier than what I'm used to, but it still works fine.

An awesome sling, Eo! I like the pattern.

@ Thearos: I find it easier, faster, tighter, less fiddly and more versatile. No loom, no nailbed required, just two hands. My personal preference at the moment (apart from timeless Aussie style leather pouches).

If you want to try it, it might be best to use jute.

The pouch was made in two separate parts, and I made them like knotted friendship bracelets.  There are lots of different patterns, but this is the only one I've tried so far... still learning the others.  To get the loops you start it around a pencil, and then just tie a loop on the other end.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.
