If you cut off most/all of the cylinder part so just the cone is left, that would save weight and likely reduce wear once filed smooth again. you could add a sacrificial layer of tape or something between the metal and the paracord. still though, its unforgiving metal rubbing constantly against the most active part of the sling.
Yes, it might be best to keep only the most critical part—the transition from the cord to the flared section, plus just a small amount of the flare itself.
Other issues might also be resolved by switching materials—for instance, to 3D-printed TPU or PETG to reduce weight, or ideally leather, though achieving the desired shape would likely be more difficult with the latter.
Currently, on my main line, the transition from the rope thickness to the double knot is achieved simply by wrapping strands...
