Thanks Teg- I generally try to splice it back into the braid if it's a synthetic material. Can you elaborate on the second option you proposed?
Two photos of a "quick and dirty" model appended.
I substituted the white strings by coloured threads. Green threads turn counterclockwise, blue threads clockwise. 6 strand round braid. I traced back all three green threads, one blue thread and with the second blue thread I'm working this moment.
A 6 strand braid has a hollow core. So in the end you pull the threads into the hollow core (or continue tracing back and taper them). This step is not shown.
Just do this "tracing back" for long enough. 5 full turns should be enough, but it depends on the braid and the material. With the green threads I made one revolution. The tension on the braid will usually hold it together, so no seewing, glueing or whipping is required. Use a needle with a stub point and pay attention on how tight you make your braid. Test for stability before you cut the strings.
To my knowledge this works with most braids pretty well. The tricky part is to figure out how to begin so that the transition looks nice. But this I will leave up to you.

There are many, many variations of this approach. Make some models, use imagination and make what you like most

.
I did a similar thing in the Lovelock sling with a 8 strand square braid in the picture above.
