Stenny's cutlery (with pics)

Sooo, here are my knives. They are all made from HSS steel - specifically from sawblades used to cut mild steel Shocked - so they are hard to machine, but the payoff is that they can chop nails without any real damage! All except the Falcon are chisel ground.

Talon - my first project
...
...

Hideaway straight, sheath with button holes. Kudos to FrontSight for invention of two-finger capsule!
...
...

Double-edged karambit, bankerai scales, brass pins. My pride and joy.
...
...

Falcon, my newest blade, no sheath made yet. My first take on a normal, symmetrical grind. It was easier than I expected.
...

I would like to make myself a ginunting, but I lack a suitably long piece of steel. Still searching for one, though...

Wow.
Those are amazing.  I especially like the talon and the falcon.  Did you have much metalworking experience before doinf those?  Thanks for the pictures.

Whee, so many positive responses! Thanks all for your kind words.
Yeah, I made these myself - I began with a rougly cut piece of HSS steel(these saw blades are so tough that oxy-acetylene torch can't cut them, plasma cutter had to be used!). Then angle grinder, Dremel, lots of sweat and some blood(and lots of swearing). I melted three HSS drill bits when I was drilling holes for pins in the karambit. The handle part is annealed, but it barely helped...
My metalworking experience is very limited, almost none. I just took my time with these knives and I think it shows Cool.
Karambit? I can serve with a plasma-cut blank, I have a spare one. But the finished knife... well, pay me about 300 dollars and wait for a half a year - then, maybe, you can have one. Bankerai is a nasty thing to work with, splinters don't fester out, you have to pick them out with a needle and tweezers, one by one... Am I graphic enough? Tongue I hate that wood for working, but it has a nice texture and it doesn't warp with time.
The Falcon will be probably up for selling or trading, I just don't have the "bond" to it. It is a pretty nice knife, in all probability it can be stabbed through a car door without severe damage and it is sharp enough to shave, but I am not very attached to it, so if somebody would offer me something interesting...

very nice work there stenny.  i am just getting into knife making, i bought a bench grinder last friday.  so far i have really just put some decent edges on some cheap steak knives i found in the attic, and made a really crummy knife from a peice of mystery metal barstock.  i did take the rocker lock from an el cheapo pocket knife, and grind a wharncliff style edge onto it, about an inch long.

i really like that top one, with the semi wharncliff style knife, but i don't like that the fact that the blade is tipped back.  i imagine it could be a little akward to cut with, though for self defense it would be quite good.  i am rather fond of wharnies, and have found that they can be quite easy to make on a small scale.

Neat-o,
I am quite taken with the hideaway. I am surprised that you are new to knife making, they look professional. Great designs, looks like nice craftsmanship. Even the sheaths are great and that is an art in itself. You are talented.
You should share your talent with the world.
You should send a piece of your talent (like the hideaway)to Canada, to someone who will show it off and appreciate it(like me).
That would give you a great feeling of satisfaction.

(Seriously though, excellent work I am impressed.)

I forgot to add: Sheaths are from wax-impregnated leather and acetone-formed, so they hold knives even when tip-up and shaken - except the karambit, because of it's curvy profile and centre of mass way to the side. That is the reason for the retention strap.
siguy: tipped back? I am afraid I don't understand. You mean you would like to have the edge in the same line with the handle? If yes, I can assure you that small knives (like Talon) are handy with this type of blade/handle angle - it prevent your knuckles from hitting cutting board, etc. I cut bread and cheese with it, peeled apples(less-than-ideal knife for this application, because of the chisel grind), opened envelopes... It works well.
lupis: HAK is very good for opening boxes, it just whizzes through tape, cardboard, everything. I like it. I won't send it Cheesy.

so with the hideaway, did you figure out the finger hole or find a way to get the pattern from the maker?

very nice knives.

yes, that is what i meant by the way, about the handle being in line with the edge.  i understand about bashing your knuckles on a cutting board etc, but i don't have that problem as i often cut in the air for that sort of thing (super dangerous towards the thumb style)

I made a plywood HAK model and kept enlarging the hole until it felt right. So, trial and error was the way.

Beatiful work Stenny  Smiley! I really like that last one. How do you like the chisel grinds?

I'm working on a sort of hideaway myself ecept it's a one finger hole and half-hole instead a 2 finger capsule - partly because I like it that way, partly because it's the only design that will fit onto my scrap.
