Question for nwmanitou. (others welcome)
Sep 27th, 2006 at 12:22am

Hey hey! Grin

This is mainly a question for nwmanitou, but other's input is quite appreciated.

What is your sling made of? (like, the one shown in your video.)
Is it just cordage with a pouch? If so, what do you use?
So far, the one I practice with uses thick shoelaces. However, the sling twists, so instead of being able to hold it like you do,  I have to have both cords on the outside of my hand, which is less powerful.  Undecided

Would stiffer cords prevent twisting? (I know the shoelaces are pretty floppy)
Or is it that my grip is off?

Thanks.  8)

My main sling is made of pigskin, cord and all. I also have a woven one of hemp. I am also experimenting with woven cords of artificial sinew.

i assume the shoelaces are braided.  you might try to use thicker braided cords, as the thicker cords will promote more stability, and stiffer cords can help too.  perhaps you are using a style that promotes the twist.  what style do you use?

i made mine in about 10 minutes with duct tape.

i just taped the two ropes together instead of sewing them and then put some more tape on when i solidified the pouch.  it has worked fine for heavy loads and everything.  it reduces the time by alot without too much penalty in the way of structural integrity.

Siguy; yes, the laces are braided, but they're rather floppy.  I use the fig. 8, which seems to make it twist.

Taiki; thanks for the link. Actually, I was making that kind out of duct tape before I saw the article.  Grin

Siguy again; yes, what I do is just tie the strings together. Makes for easier work.

Thanks.    8)

perhaps it is the figure eight that is causing them to twist.  do you do any fast twisting motion with your hand during the cast that might cause this?

other wise, what i made last night is a mini version of the sling, but i just knotted the cords at the joints, and then i put the first peice of ducttape on the center, and because it was a small pouch, it took up almost all the space, and there is a double cord coming out of the corners of the square pouch, and it seems pretty stable.  it is tiny though.

Hi.
The sling that I use most are made of nylonstring and goatskin (spelling?).
My other slings are braided hampstring with goatskin sewn on where the stone is to be. Smiley

I'll bet they're a work of art, Rebel.
I'd probably be able to learn the braids, but I don't have the resources or the money to make them. *sniff* Cry
The most I have is leather and stiff cords.

Southpaw,
If you have learned to braid hair you can braid a sling.
If you haven't learned to braid hair yet, every girl and woman and most boys and men can teach you.
To make a braid for a sling you grip 3 bunches of thin string rather than 3 bunches of hair, it is even easier.

For instructions (if you are to shy to ask someone  Wink)

Hi Southpaw.
My first braided sling is made of sisal and took about 7 hours to make. Today it takes about 4 hours.
I learned to make slings here on slinging.org.
The cost is about $3. It is a very cheap weapon indead Smiley
