Try in an archery or hunting place. They seem to love them there.

I've used  an ACME rangefinder  (20 yards of cord marked every 5 yards with a ballpoint mark)

I wish! That would be a good idea though.

There's a stump on the other side of a pond I use for a target that I'd like to know the distance of. Pacing it off would be a little difficult. I thought about using a compass and a calculator though. I'd just need to take a bearing on the stump, pace off a given distance in a straight line down the shore, take another bearing on the stump, and run the numbers on the calculator. Now if I could only remember that formula!

A rangefinder would indeed be a much easier way to do it..

Many have died, last week, on these streets. In the basement of this building, you will find them. I have given them the last rites, now, you do what you will. You are stronger than us... But soon, I think they be stronger than you. When the dead walk, seņores, we must stop the killing... or lose the war. &&-dawn of the dead ~1978~&&

Sounds cool! I'm looking forward to the photos - sounds like a perfect solution for water slinging so long as the baseline is wide enough for accuracy in the 1-400m (maybe one day) range.
