Here's a couple for you..

http://www.leatherfactory.com/Home.asp

They do individual sales and wholesale to businesses. They carry leather(duh), eyelets, tools.

http://www.braidershand.com/

These folks have a couple of books covering Andean sling braids. They also have a Marudai (essentially a Japanese sinnet frame, spendy but nice looking), and EZ-bobs (10 for $4). If you have trouble tangling up your strands when working on braids, EZ-bobs are a simple solution. This page may load slow but has some cool products.

I use a type of tennis string called "Ashaway Kevlar" sold in reels of 720 and 360 ft.  Super strong, thin and light.

sold at:

www.tenniswarehouse.com and www.atssports.com

We're going to run into some _severe_ US sources VS international sources if we keep along similar lines... I really like the idea though... Maybe in addition to commercial sources we can list "type" sources like Tint's... My local sources aren't any use to anyone but myself, Mike_R and maybe Snapback (you still out there SB?)?

There is a _huge_ discrepancy between industry and hobby pricing for almost every type of material though. The real trick is finding the local guys who use the materials in question. I work in the fishing industry - and the twine needed to make a (high tech kevlar-braid, ultra light, extra range) sling is worth about 45 cents. Buy it on ebay or at the craft store and pay 45$... The same is true no matter where you are. We had a nice thread recently about coir fibres. _IF_ you could find them locally (unless you live in French Guiana) you'd pay through the nose... realise that the same fibre is what is used in the free doormat at the buck'o-riffic and away we go...

I'll try to think up some "universal" sources for good slinging materials to add to the list. We already have plently of examples of the idea that buying old shoes is cheaper than buying "virgin" leather for sling pocket... as an example. I'm not sure what this says about our society but...

Lets keep on with Dan's original thrust, but add "generic" ideas as well. The resultshould be a great resource for future slingaholics!

Again I agree with Matthias.
So let me start with adding a list with places to look for string and leather.

Start looking in the storage in your own house, old bags and shoes for leather and string, on top of that you can use a lot of normal household things as source of string if you braid of twist it.

Second hand markets, they can be called:
carboot sales, garage sales vilage fairs or church does. (The kind where people sell everything and have to pay little or nothing for their stand are the best to go first.)
Look for all the above as well as 'raw' materials.

Charity shops, second hand goods shops and alike, if they repair the goods before selling you may be able to get hold of good leather from damaged furniture.

Shops selling remainders:
$shops, everything 1 pound, eporium, action......

Building markets, DIY shops and hardware stores, (mainly for string, but the real big ones sometimes have leather as well,)

Super markets and hyper markets.
All around the world those sell more than you expect even when you do your dayly shopping there.

Shoe repair shops, the kind that repair in the shop and sell shoelaces (strings) as well, often they do bigger repairs on leather too.

Specialists shops like sadlers, yacht shops, ship-chandlers and fishing shops, look for the kind where they make things or sell the components rather than the ready made things.

Craft stores and outdoor activity shops, they should have the best selection but they always have the highest prices too.

....

If it is a small shop, talk with the owner, if it is part of a big chain, talk with the person doing the ordering for the shop to ask if they can order something especially for you.

In most of the above you can find balls, marbles and often small rocks too or bake your own ammo.

Dan,
I agree that a list of world wide selling speciallist would be a good thing, but I have found that most stores do not sell internationally, even if they sell on the net.
And if they do, you will have to pay a lot on postage so they can not beat the price of a local/national source.
For most people it does not matter is the cord is real paracord or a local cord that has the same chacarteristics.

So what you are making is a list with many shops not available or good for most readers.
You can concentrate on a list with only USA addresses, or a list that will work for everybody but does not contain actual addresses. It would be no good for you in the states to have me add my personal top 10 of addresses, because non of them will sell outside Europe, or if they do, they will be twise as dear.

Even within one country it is most often better to go to the local store, and the best of those are the ones not in a large chain, so any address will be just local.

No! No! The list is great idea... I was just suggesting we include "generic" sources as well as individual stores. We can always go over the data later and sort the suggestions into categories.

Let's hear them!

I am not against lists of addresses, as long as people realise thatany address is local, national or at best continental. (there may be a few exceptions that do sell worldwide, but than take the postal cost in mind.)

So if you do add an address to the list, please name the country in which you know it works.)

To start with my top of the list string seller, more for decorative and nautical but willing to go for specials too:

Footrope knots.  Ipswich, England. Will post worlwide.

knots@footrope.fsnet.co.uk tel in England, 01473 690090  no website

Some more ropey addresses in England

KLK Ropework,

nooo... probably within 5 min of everyone "there". This was our point! Our membership is very international.

So what we do is say:

Walmart (USA - local)
leather, paracord, mason twine, fishing line, small balls.
www.walmart.com

Or something along those lines!

Hey I think the list will be a great addition no matter what! Particularily the bits about information sources etc. Since you are the master compiler, you can ask for info in any form you want Wink I think it helps to know that Het Touwhuis sells mountaineering gear, rather than have to guess that they sell hats and toupées.

I'll get right on my Canadian sources and web links!
