Peruvian slings - the wrist/finger loop
Jul 27th, 2006 at 11:06am

I'm going to make a Peruvian sling. I've measured up all the twine needed, quite a work actually, and put them on spools. Tongue

So, I wonder, is it possible to braid the wrist/finger loop (I'll make finger loop), with same technique as the release and retention cord?

Edit: Or perhaps a weaved fingerloop, like the pouch?

You can try finger weaving it.
http://www.northwestjournal.ca/sash.html

You could round braid it like the cords. If you are using an 8 strand round braid with 8 strand core for your cord, just use a 4 strand round braid with a 4 strand core for your finger loop. Rond braid with 4 strandsfor 4 or so inches, then fold the braid and then continue normaly with an 8 strand round braid with an 8 strand core.
Do you understand?

I cant wait to see your sling.

That link looked a little too complicated, but I think I can make it with the cord technique.

I have 16 strands made ready, so there will in the fingerloop be 8 strand core.

Thanks for help! Grin

Eek, makes me nervous when knowing there are people waiting to see it done! Lips Sealed

Explain more about square knot mothod...?

The thing got completely tangled up and looked terrible, so I'll start again.

The problem I got was that when I was gonna pull the strands tight, it went wrong somehow, and when I had done like 4 cm, it looked really bad. So I tried to take it up, and that didn't make it much better...

Amras, how do you do when you pull the strands tight? How do you keep the strands while braiding and all that?

Could you explain your problem any more?
I am not sure what went wrong. Maybe a picture would help.
I never had problems with the round braid.
I am not sure what you are asking either.

The braid didn't get smooth. Like, the twine braided around the cord didn't lay evenly. How do you pull the strands tight?

I'll tomorrow get a long stick, about two meters. This will make it easier to measure up the twine, and I'll have some things on it where I can fasten the sling while braiding. I hope it'll make it easier, and that it'll go better.

I'll just try tomorrow, and see if I get it better then...

What made it go completely wrong, was actually that I tried to fix it I think... Tongue

I pull the strands as tight as I can without breaking the twine.
Maybe pull every strand tight every time you braid one strand.
Usually when I get a strand in the braid that dose not lay flat I find the strand that is the problem and pull  it as hard as I think is safe, and that usually fixes it.
That will not work if if you catch it to late.

Tie all your strings tightly together and to a fixed point, best a hook on a wall or a tree.
That way you can pull.
I normally pull on a string when working with it, but more important, when I pick up the new string to braid with, I pull all the slack out.
And every once in a while I pull all strings one at the a time all after an other. When I just start braiding I do that each 8 moves, later, when I get more in the ritme, I do it when the braids looks a little untidy.

If I do a peruvian that uses 16 strings, then I'll actually use 8 strings at double length.  Right in the center I'll make a few inches of 8 strand round braid then double it over and start the 16 strand braid.  That way you have a nice continuity between the loop and the cord.  You just have to make sure you have good tightness and organization on the transition point or it can look a little sloppy.

Thanks for all help guys and Willeke! Grin

I'm a bit busy at the moment, going to Setesdalskappleiken (fiddle competition) this weekend, so I've been practicing quite much... Undecided

Will do the sling after the kappleik.
