Herakles....the slinger? :)

found this Greek vase with Herakles attacking the Stymphalion Birds as a slinger. Herakles is typically depicted as an archer, so i thought it was neat.

Awesome find, rob Smiley

Perhaps this shows us that they considered it a great weapon to hunt for birds?

I am convinced that this is the "reload" position, really the only way to get control of the sling and reinsert a stone without having to chase the release node around...

And couldn't Heracles have handled a bigger stone? Smiley

This picture is the way I stand to do my overhand, no rotations slinging. Cool find!

With a little practice the release end can be recovered with the right hand by simply swinging the sling forward and underhanded, when it gets fully extended it will  snap back and almost jumps into your hand, very easy to catch. This leaves the left hand free to get another stone out of your pocket.
Herakles looks ready to fire, to me.

Wouldn't suprise me if Herakles did have a sling, even if it is not specifically mentioned. As to handling a larger stone, remember, there is only so much room on the amphora to portay things. If they portayed the stone in proportion to Herakles, there would be no room for anything else.
